A good reference book

Norman Daoust should be commended for fighting his way though UML specifications and giving us a much more consumable form of the needed information for the business analyst. My only pushback would be that he would do a bit more filtering but that is a quibble. Mr. Daoust presents 14.5 models (diagrams with text) of which only about four are used with any kind of frequency.

The first four chapters of the book are forms of introduction to the models and UML in general. I found it fairly straightforward with a few head scratches. I think Mr. Daoust gets a little to picky with the UML here (make sure we use the terms "model" and "diagram" correctly), it seems to be fair enough. I have to admit, I didn't get chapter three's table 3-1 on frames. I have no idea how that really impacts the business analyst.

Chapter five starts the models use cases. I think this is the best model to start with. The diagram can be used to set context and the text can describe a task. While I agree that Use Cases can be used at multiple levels, my understanding is that it was primarily designed to be at a "task" level: a term that is need of a definition. I was a little sad to see that Mr. Daoust doesn't take that up well. I was also surprised by the use of the terms "Main Success Scenario" and "Extensions". Those are sucky names and I will need to beat up on my buddies on the UML board if those terms came from those nasty specifications.

Chapter six is Activity Diagrams and that turned out well. I would then skip to chapter 19, Data Models Using Class Diagram Notation as I think that is far more useful to business analysts than Mr. Daoust's desire to use Class Models (mostly we are talking about the use--or omission in my case--of the methods). Then onto chapter ten on State Diagrams. The rest of the chapters are there because UML says they are there but, while you may use them, you probably won't. Anyway, you wouldn't use but the main four with any kind of frequency so you would suck at them and it would probably be better not to try to model it.

One place I differ the most with Mr. Daoust is on the use of Sequence Diagrams and Object Diagrams. Mr. Daoust supports using both and suggest not in my training. I think it has to do with the nature of working with business people. I find that the use of these two diagrams is too technical and confusing for business people. If you are working on a systems project with technical folks who program in an OO language, go for it.

There is a nice case study in the back where you can get an overview of how the models might go together. Unfortunately, many models were thrown into the case study and, even though you can model it, I am not sure much value was added. However, if it helps save a ton or rework later, model on.

This is a good book and I will be recommending it to my clients as a reference on how the models work and a good reminder of the notation.

Thorough, clear, relevant & practical book on UML aimed at business analysts

Several months ago (before this book was released) I attended a talk by the author at my local IIBA chapter and won a copy in a raffle. The talk was very good and it was clear that he knows the subject well. A few days ago I received my copy.
After skimming the whole thing and diving into a few chapters, it looks excellent.

Some things I liked:
- Daoust clearly spent a great deal of time thinking about which material to include and how to present it. (This is no slap-dash job.)
- He relates very well to his business analyst audience.
- He gives an excellent description of Structure Diagrams vs Behavior diagrams (the two main subcategories of UML diagrams).
- A nice section that describes "which diagrams do I create and when."
- In the parts that explain specific types of diagrams (Ch. 5-Ch. 19) the subsections provide just the kind of information that will help BA's: (a) Purpose, (b) Guidelines, (c) Diagram Notation, (d) Diagram Example, (e) Diagram Tips, (f) Naming Guidelines, (g) Modeling Process Summary, (h) Case Study Example Diagram, and (i) Relationships to Other UML Diagrams.
- Good ideas you might not have thought of. For example: use Communication Diagram notation to create Context Diagrams and use Class Diagram notation to create Data Models.

Neophytes will find it to be an excellent introduction to UML from a business analyst's perspective and experienced readers will find it to be a good reference book, reminder of best practices and probably a source of a few new ideas.

Just what the doctor ordered.

This has got to be one of the most useful products I have ordered to learn Russian. I live in Russia and the language hasn't been as kind to me as some of the other ones. This book is great, because it gives you a lot of useful vocabulary. It also has parallel texts. It covers a lot of material. I can't imagine someone not getting a lot out of this book. It is a steal for around 9 bucks.

Wonderful Book : The Best Intermediate Language Book Ever

I can't praise this book enough : It is magnificent, combining an entertaining story line with excellent, lively, naturally colloquial language which, with its parallel Russian-English format , allows advanced beginners and intermediate learners alike to quickly and painlessly take giant steps to improve their practical knowledge of Russian . I wish this type of book and format existed for every language -- In fact, I wish there were several different volumes of it for Russian alone: I think I'd buy every one. The quantity of material provided , as a previous reviewer mentioned, is awesome, too. This is an intermediate level language learner's dream come true--As they say in Russian : Kak nel'zya luchshe -- You just couldn't do this any better!
Like others, I had problems with a beginning version of this series, which for some strange reason used very unusual language in several instances---but there is no trace of the problems that existed with that book here. With this book, the author ( perhaps because the other book was the joint creation of several people, and he was on his own this time ) has created a real masterpiece, a book which I think ( based on something like 50 years' worth of language learning , work and teaching at all levels ) is the absolute , unequaled best of its kind. If you've studied a year or two of Russian and want to make giant strides forward ( while being totally entertained at the same time) , do not pass up this book ---and even if you're an advanced student of the language ( or a Russian speaker seeking to improve your English ), this book can do wonders for you, too. In summation, I know it's not original , but I can only second what the first reviewer wrote above: BRAVO to the author of this wonderful book ---- the best ever!^^^

Excellent for Beginner and early Intermediate

The vocabulary consists of commonly used words and phrases, and the interesting stories further reinforce the vocabulary in sentences with different grammatical constructions. For those at the Beginning to Intermediate level, I heartily recommend this book.

A prevailing preoccupation with biblical sites by 19th-century Europeans inspired a group of adventurous individuals, beginning in the 1840s, to excavate the ancient cities of the Middle East. The central character of this narrative is a young English Romantic, Austen Henry Layard, who becomes obsessed with the idea of uncovering the ruins of Nineveh, the capital city of the Assyrians. As Layard was preparing his dig at a site he believed to be Nineveh, an English officer in the area, Henry Rawlinson, was deciphering cuneiform, the writing system of the Assyrians. Layard and Rawlinson struck up one of the most productive archaeological partnerships in history, destined to uncover the remains of an ancient civilization and, by the decipherment of cuneiform, give it back its voice. Mesopotamian Archaeology Begins

Larsen's "The Conquest of Assyria" is a handsome volume about the re-discovery and archaeology of ancient Assyria and deciphering the cuneiform script against the backdrop of both Ottoman-held Iraq and the high Victorian society.The book centers on the three giants of discovery-the romantic Austen Henry Layard,the melancholy Paul Emile Botta, and scholar-soldier Henry Rawlinson. Seperately Botta and Layard would un-earth huge palaces with giant winged human-headed bulls guarding the entrances, and friezes showing the king at war, hunting lions, and praying to his gods. These fantastic finds would bring back to life a dead civilization shrouded in myth and legend. Larsen weaves biographies, major political dilemmas and the impact the digs had on bible-conscious Europe through an exciting story of important excavations and adventure with warring and plundering bedouin tribes, cholera, and travels to regions yet to be mapped. Perhaps the greatest tale of archaeology. A true classic.

That's what I first thought but luckily was able to find a used copy for less, and well worth whatever price you pay. "Conquest of Syria" came highly recommended by David Damrosch in a footnote in "The Buried Book: The Loss and Rediscovery of the Great Epic of Gilgamesh", and with "a Reader"'s review below, I took the chance. What a discovery! This is a very readable and enjoyable narrative of one of the most romantic and picturesque stories in archeology. Perhaps partly justifying the steep price, the book is physically above average in terms of quality - it is large format, the binding is like a tank, the boards are heavy and solid, the paper is heavy gloss, there are full-color plates, maps and drawings throughout (at least every 3rd page). The writing is in a story-telling narrative covering the lives of about half a dozen gentleman (Layard is the central hero) with adventures and tales equal to anything in India Jones. If it was re-printed in paperback for a mass audience it would probably overshadow books like The Buried Book, but for whatever reason, it remains for a limited audience because of the high price. If you have any interest in learning more about the desert adventures of 19th C archaeologists, this is one book to get lost in, it was hard to put down.

Most certianly not a con man

For those of you who keep yelling about how James Payne is a con man, you are wrong. I sended him some money and my live has been much beter. I was workign at af factory and now I have my own bed in the rehab facility and all I got to do is attend a few group sessions and talk aboiut my feelings and its all funded by tackspayers.

I'll just say that the selected scriptures I read when moved to pick up this small book, are very inspiring. Scriptures from the Holy Bible that remind the reader that we need to have Faith in the promises of God AlmightY if we will ever receive his unlimited blessings. We are to realize that much of the Blessings are not visible as they are of his Holy Spirit, and may visit us in visible forms at different times in our life. How true!! I found this book on my shelves after I was thinking about how many blessings I have been given by the Lord God, the quantities, and varieties, all through my life. And that we live in the Lords kingdom, his places, and we are not abandoned children but loved. The evidence is around us , in the earth and sky, in the people... the riches are everywhere.
Here's a quotation from this book, from Deuteronomy 28: "And all these blessings will come on thee, and overtake thee, if you shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God."
