S. Chandrasekhar on black holes and gravitational waves: What a story! Forty years after his pioneer investigations, Chandra returned to the study of the dead stars. He had told us back in 1931 that massive stars could not die as ordinary objects, consisting of regular matter, could. Eddington would rebuff the idea as absurd; the scientific community would side mostly with Eddington; and, although the Schwarzschild solution was waiting around for its correct interpretation, the development of black holes would be delayed by a few decades. So, although all the ingredients were there and we did not have to wait too long, it was not until the sixties that we would incorporate black holes into our world view.

About the Author
Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (1910-1995)�received many awards in his career, including the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1983, the National Medal of Science (U.S.), and the Copley Medal of the Royal Society (London). He was the Morton D. Hull Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, the Department of Physics, and the Enrico Fermi Institute at the University of Chicago.

14th Century Muslim Travelogue for Modern People

Ross Dunn, historian, has done a remarkable job of telling us about the travels and adventures of a man who traveled the world a half-century after Genoese adventurer Marco Polo taught Europe about the Orient. The difference between Polo and Ibn Battuta is that the latter simply left home as a young man to perform the Muslim religious duty of the hajj - the pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina - and got caught up in other projects on the road for the next couple of decades.

Ross' narrative is informed - he's a scholar who knows Arabic and is familiar with the history of Islam - and also very funny. His dry humor permeates the narrative and adds much readability to what might be otherwise unremarkable material. Examples include his observations about Ibn Battuta's Sunday shouting down with Quranic verses of the Christian bells in an Anatolian town and the story of Ibn Battuta being stripped and left with a flourish by sea pirates.

Ibn Battuta traveled in high Muslim circles throughout northern Africa, the Arabian neighborhood, ancient Turkey, Persia and India. Ross does a good job of qualifying the possible Chinese visit Ibn Battuta claims to have made. Later, near the end of his career, Ibn Battuta would penetrate the African heartland, ironically exploring his own continent last.

Highly recommended for students of Islam, world history of the Middle Ages, and travel adventures in general. Ross, in my opinion, exalts the material to five stars.

Interesting telling of history using a traveler's journey as a narrative thread

The story that this is based on is truly amazing. Traveling from Morocco to Mecca at age 21, Ibn Battuta finds he enjoys traveling so much that he gets as far as China and doesn't return home until 24 years later. He gets there through a combination of personal charm and taking advantage of the fact that one of the five pillars of Islam at the time was "almsgiving," or the sharing of material wealth with the poor, orphans, and wayfarers.

Using the travels of such a character as a narrative thread is a great way to tell the history of the region. Throughout Battuta's travels, Dunn fills in well-researched historical background information that helps paint a picture of what the Middle East was like so long ago. Unfortunately, though Dunn claims that Battuta was introspective, we don't see that much of his introspection in this book, and you'd have to be a real history geek to get the most out of this. We learn more about sacred sites, tribal conquests, and factual details about Battuta's journey than we do about people.

If you're a history buff, you'll love this. There's no question that Ibn Battuta deserves at least equal footing with Marco Polo as the greatest traveler writer of medieval times. If you're not a history buff, the narrative thread will help make it somewhat accessible. To a non-historian, 90% of this book consists of factual details that I'll forget by tomorrow. Personally, I wish I had read Dover Book's Travels of Ibn Battuta instead, which is a direct translation of Ibn Battuta's story.

World-Class Traveler !

It is incredible to think that back in the 1300's one person could have traveled from Morocco through North and East Africa, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, the Crimea, India, Ceylon, Indonesia and China. I get tired just writing about it! But this is what Ibn Battuta did. When you think of how difficult (and dangerous!) it was to travel back in those days, it is just amazing. What makes this book especially fascinating is the look it provides into Muslim society. Here was a man who journeyed thousands of miles over many, many years but who only very rarely felt himself to be a stranger in a strange land. In some places Islam was in the majority and in some places it was the minority but Ibn Battuta was always able to find educated Moslems similar to himself who could provide a place to live, food to eat, clothes to wear and money to spend. Very importantly also, they could provide spiritual support to a person very far from home. This book is best when it settles down in one place for an extended period, such as when Ibn Battuta journeyed to Medina and Mecca. This is the most important trip a Moslem takes during an entire lifetime and it is expected, health and finances permitting, that a believer will make the trip at least once in a lifetime. Medina is where the tomb of The Prophet is and Mecca was His birthplace. Mr. Dunn provides a physical description of the landscape of both places so that you can almost feel you are there and he also gives a fascinating description of the logistics of the journey as this is a trip that thousands of people would take each year and a solid support system was needed to provide transportation and food and water, etc. The religious ceremonies that a person was required to go through once in the Holy Cities is also given in great detail. The book is also very good when Ibn Battuta settles down in India for awhile and gets a nice, cushy government job working for a despot who sounds as though he was probably psychotic! You could be in his favor one minute but apparently if you looked at him the wrong way he might decide on the spur of the moment to have you executed. He would also come up with grandiose ideas to rearrange the entire society which would usually wind up making everyone miserable, if not dead. Kind of sounds pretty familiar, doesn't it? I guess some things don't change over the centuries..... Anyway, the only drawback to this book is that Mr. Dunn is trying to cram a lot of travel into a 300 page book so that some of the time you feel as though you are being given the "bum's rush" on one of those modern package trips where they shuttle you through 14 cities in 14 days. After awhile some of the itinerary starts to become one, big blur. It makes you wish that Mr. Dunn would have decided to write a longer book where things could have proceeded at a more leisurely pace. But this book is a good starting point and it gave me a glimpse into a world I knew very little about but would like to learn more of.

Pastoral Care Before 1700 AD

Oden has an interesting goal, which is to explore *classical* Christian pastoral care. This means that Oden does not use any sources prior to 1700. To many professors of pastoral care, this might seem worthy of a pamphlet, but a four book series, surely not? Truth be known, pastoral care is not a modern phenomenon, despite what most pastoral care manuals might suggest. In fact, if one probes the writings of great Christians from the Bible until the 1700s, great wisdom and insight are available for pastors and priests seeking to better understand and practice their ministerial office.
This volume (One of Four) focuses on becoming a minister, including the individual and community's call, classical pastoral metaphors, and ordination. He discusses different understandings of ecclesial offices, including bishop, presbyter, and deacon. He also outlines the traditional means of preparing for soul care, including moral development, and the balance of academics and practical training. Throughout the book Oden generally embraces doctrines, practices, and metaphors for pastoral care that are based on classical ecumenical agreement, that is, on doctrines and practices that the worldwide Church has embraced. For instance, if Roman Catholics have a particular practice that is unknown to Anglicans and Orthodox, it is likely Oden might explain it, but he will fall back on the more ecumenical view. This makes his book useful for most mainline Christians in the catholic tradition. However, Oden does accept women's ordination, making generally good arguments in its favor.
This book is useful because it is littered with classical Christian wisdom. There is more text quoted from classical Christian writers than Oden himself has written. The major figures, including John Chrysostom, Augustine, Gregory the Great, Luther, and others are liberally represented. Even smaller figures are quoted, showing the depth of Oden's knowledge in this field. Sometimes, the book has so much information built into each chapter it can be trying reading. However, that potential weakness aside, as modernism is dying, and its ideas are seen in a far worse light, Oden's book is a breath of fresh air. Believe it or not, Pastoral Care is far more than just the thought of 19th and 20th century secular thinkers expressed with church terminology. Oden shows that the classical catholic tradition has much value for pastors and future pastors, and I wish this were a standard textbook in today's seminaries.

Should Be in Every Pastor's Library!

Thomas Oden's Classical Pastoral Care series is a pastoral resource of the first order. I highly recommend it for all pastors as an essential foundation for the nature and scope of pastoral ministry, rooted in the wisdom of the Church of all ages and places. I'm using the first two volumes in a seminary course I'm teaching on The Cure of Souls (and would use the others if we had time). One of the values of the series is that it can be read sequentially or in small chunks depending on the particular need of the busy pastor. Perhaps most importantly, Oden has made the classical texts on pastoral ministry easily accessible to the modern pastor.

In each of the 4 volumes of the series, Oden discusses major areas of pastoral care in terms of what Christian pastors, priests, bishops, and theologians have said about pastoral care from the 1st century to around 1700. Because Oden is drawing from what has been the ecumenical consensus from all traditions - early church, Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Churches, Protestants, etc. - the wisdom found in each volume is, indeed, classical. Interspersed with the classical texts Oden provides his own commentary and introduction to the material.

Oden is right in his Introduction when he says that "pastoral care has often been practiced in our time with narrow unhistorical, or even anti-historical assumptions and prejudices." He's also correct when he reminds us that "the whole apparatus of commentary and scholarship has shown a bias in the direction of philosophical, exegetical, and doctrinal questions to the neglect of the practical care of souls." In order to correct these deficiencies, Oden presents an exemplary group of classic texts and writers to help shape the nature of pastoral ministry today.

In Volume One of the series, "Becoming a Minister," Oden arranges his material into the following 7 chapters:

1. The Pastoral Calling
2. The Shepherding Metaphor
3. Authority for Pastoral Care
4. The General Ministry of the Whole Church and the Sacred Ministry
5. Ordination
6. Women in Ministry
7. Preparation for Care of Souls

I found the first 2 chapters especially good, since they give the pastor or potential pastor a vision for the seriousness and glory of the pastoral ministry. Every pastor would benefit from reading this volume and the deep and ancient wisdom embodied in it. It will help the pastor understand more clearly the noble nature of his calling as well as how to better prepare for this calling.

Because this series is so valuable, I find it unfortunate and inexplicable that it is, apparently, out of print.

MOVE OVER JACOB AND EDWARD !

Dont get me wrong I love Twilight but it was young adult . This was more "adult sexy" These vampires were more like the ones I grew up watching , sleeping during the day coming out at sundown. When the vampires would feed or get angry I pictured them looking the ones in 90's movie Lost Boys. Great read ! Move over Jacob and Edward here come Jason and Lucas

To those who gave this book 5 stars... What were you thinking? Did we even read the same book? Geez! The story is such a drag. I couldn't wait for it to be over. I kept hoping for redemption. It just never happened.

My typical measure of a good book is my eagerness, or at the very least, my interest, to read the book again. This one doesn't even instill the urge. Please. Save your money.

WOW! Awesome Read!

This is an awesome book. I was totally drawn in from the beginning all the way to the end. There was plenty of love, some sex, and suspense. The book has everything including great characters. Lucas is a hot alpha male vampire and his love, Elsa is a charming, sweet gal. The storyline was great as well. Definitely give yourself an enjoyable reading experience and try out this book.

Just Starting

I left teaching for a job in Biotech a few years ago. If I had read this book first, I might not have left. I might have found the courage to finish my student teaching. Now times have changed again, I find my self in the credential program to be a guidance counselor. One of my assignments was to review a book about Philosophy of teaching, it was by chance that I came across Mrs. Draper's book. I believe that any form of art that invokes an emotional response in me to be brillant. Mrs. Draper's experiences placed in print brought me to tears, made me smile and most of all challenged me to think. I just wish I had read it sooner.

I have read a many books about my dear country and my people. Many of them have been hilarious and spot on! My American husband got this book and I read it. I was quite disturbed about page 101-102 Step3: How to chat up a Finnish girl. In which level Finnish women want to hear someone telling them that their bush is awesome place to pop a tent? or that they should try if their tongue sticks guys flagpole? really? GUYS: if you say these things to a Finnish women, expect a visit to our awesome healthcare locations... or getting a ton a load comments about your manhood right back at ya!

After that I stopped reading.. not enough room here to point out all errors.. If you want to read rough truth about Finns (even woman) read a "From Finland with Love" -book. You will laugh hard and it is spot on!

There are some very stupid books out there. This is one of the best of them. Amazon wouldn't accept this unless I clicked on one star.
