Most are familiar with the Michigan-Ohio football rivalry, an intense but usually good-natured contest that stretches back over one hundred years. Yet far fewer may know that in the early nineteenth century Michigan and Ohio were locked in a different kind of battle---one that began before Michigan became a state.

The conflict started with a long-simmering dispute over a narrow wedge of land called the Toledo Strip. Early maps were famously imprecise, adding to the uncertainty of the true boundary between the states. When Ohio claimed to the mouth of the Maumee River, land that according to the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 fell in the territory of Michigan, the "Toledo War" began.

Today the fight may bring a smile to Michiganians and Ohioans because both states benefited: Ohioans won the war and Michigan got the Upper Peninsula. But back then passions about rightful ownership ran high, and it would take many years---and colorful personalities all the way up to presidents---to settle the dispute. Don Faber is best known as the former editor of the Ann Arbor News. a "War" between Ohio & Michigan and the Loser was . . . Wisconsin

It was a war in which no humans were killed. It supposedly involved principle, prestige and honor. Some have argued that in the end both sides received land that neither had a right to possess. This conflict was between the state of Ohio and the then territory of Michigan. And it's probably accurate to say that most current residents of Ohio and Michigan are unaware that a nasty argument over a 468 square mile strip of land around Toledo had Buckeyes and Wolverines in a fighting mood during the early 1830s. It is known to history as the "Toledo War".

The conflict over the strip had been festering for some time before it came to a head in 1835 when Michigan desired to become a state. But Ohio (which had become a state in 1803) said "no way, Michigan". Ohioans wanted no statehood for their neighbors to the north until a boundary dispute between the two was settled. . . in Ohio's favor.

A few specifics. If the language of the Northwest Ordinance (of 1787) had been strictly followed, the strip belonged to Michigan. That is what President Andrew Jackson's Attorney General ruled. But Ohio had claimed (at the time and shortly after it achieved statehood)that its northern boundary should be north of the disputed strip, and therefore Toledo, and its lucrative future economic possibilities belonged to the Buckeye state.

In the end, as it often does, political might ruled. Ohio (and Indiana and Illinois, which had also benefitted) had voting Senators, Congressmen, and electoral votes. Michigan, as a territory, had none of these. The compromise solution: Ohio to receive the 468 square mile Toledo strip and Michigan gets 9,000 square miles of land in the western upper peninsula - - land that was detached from Wisconsin territory! So, in the words of one writer (described in the book as an Ohio historian): "Both parties acquired lands...that neither had any legal right to....If there was one loser in all this, it was Wisconsin...." (p. 182)

The little known and at times humorous subject is revived in this 2008 book by Don Faber. The book skips around quite a bit and is not always easy to follow. The Toledo War awaits its historian, but in the meantime this account may be the best we have on a topic that doesn't get discussed much except perhaps in Ohio history and Michigan history textbooks and courses.

I especially like the epilogue where the author discusses Michigan's "lost peninsula". Bet you didn't know about that!

The Toledo War

This is a very interesting and well-researched work. Much discussed in the Toledo and Michigan area, but largely ignored as an academic subject, this topic was long overdue for the excellent treatment this qualified author gives it. An interesting read that includes much about the context of the times in which the event occurs.

Fascinating history

This is a well written account of a fascinating piece of American history. The book is definitely worth a read. My only criticism is that the author tends to wander in an almost stream-of-conscious manner throughout the book. This is most especially noticeable during the last few chapters of the book where the writer jumps back to the middle of the war after already addressing the war's end and Michigan's admission into statehood. Don't let that stop you from enjoying an otherwise fine book.

Surprisingly Good ....

This book was recommended to me by a Facebook page of an author I follow. I read the story synopsis and didn't know if I would like it due to the urban element to it described by some of the reviews. I am not into the"hard core" urban stories but I like read to stories with alpha males and the feisty women they get with. Truly had a very hard and tragic childhood and the relationship with her twin sister was complicated. I am glad their stories were different and befitting of them both. I liked how she would get in Bannon's sh*t when she was pissed with him about things he did and I loved how they loved each other through all their baggage and issues. She had a good heart and was about taking care of her family, even her trifling ass sister.

Bannon, my man, I loved him because he was handsome, rich, well-endowed and as flawed as Truly. He went looking for one thing and got something entirely different. Isn't that how life goes most times. I loved his interactions with Truly, the guys on the block and the relationship with the children. I also loved how he handled his business when he felt his things were violated; as a person who loves gangster movies - he could get gangsta and did numerous times. I liked the integration of the other characters in their story that could possibly lead to future stories about them. Like Athena and Jamie, what happened or is happening with them or other family member. I agree that the story could've been shorter and there were some editing issues but, for me, it didn't make it less enjoyable. If her future books will be this gritty and real with a true love story like this one, I will be a forever fan. This was a very good start for her first widely, published book. I want more just like it.......

A BADD couple..oh yeah

My goodness..this is the BEST book I have read in 2016. TrulyHappy and Bannon Antonov are two of the baddest people I have ever read. Their meeting was as unconventional as one could dream of. Tru comes form the wrong side of the tracks and struggles everyday just to survive. She was dealt a hand that would have caused the average person to just throw in the towel. She is a natural fighter. The odds are heavily stacked against her, her children, her sister and her neighbors.

Bannon Antonov was born with a golden spoon in his mouth. His inheritance once he reaches the ripe old age of 30 is 400 Billion dollars +. He is an a born leader in his family. He is a mover and a shaker. He seems to have the midas touch, but his alter ego is a killer as vicious as he is successful.

What could these two have in common? They both think the other is drop dead gorgeous and they love good music, literature, dancing and sex with the other. Wow, what was supposed to be a one time thing leads to two children for Tru and Bannon.

If you like raw adventure, sensual love and a page turning read.. this is the book for you. At times the editing needed to be done, however, I was drawn in real deep and was on a mission to complete this story.

This is my first read of JanJan Untamed, but if she puts out another one...I am dead on it...
This books even has some helpful hints on how to keep your man from straying outside of a relationship...Tru is an expert on quite a few things in this book..Again a great read...Well done, well done..

Tru and Bannon are everything...dysfunctional but everything

This was like an old school Sidney Sheldon put in the ghetto and then injected with molly. LOVED it. This had me up reading until 5 am. Yeah, the second half could have used some tighter editing (I could feel that the author was pushing to get it all outoutoutoutOUT) but the story had me on the edge of my seat. The writer has a sharp voice, eye for detail, and ear for voices living in the 'hood that, with more polish, could really be great to follow. (Get this woman an editor!)
This is NOT a sweet romance. There are grown ass issues, grown ass decisions, grown ass situations, and that 'view from the bottom' is real, man. It made me flinch thinking about the neighborhood I grew up in and the women I used to know.
But Tru and Bannon are TIGHT. I have never read a square romance couple be down for a MMF hook up just for the heroine's birthday. That ish was amazing. I almost elbowed my sweet guy in his sleep to yell at him, 'Why can't you love me like Bannon loves Tru??' But I didn't. Because I'm not an abused ex-prostitute/addict/exotic dancer with 4 kids and he's not a billionaire/more than slightly psychopathic/married man with attachment and impulse control issues.

Chinese Ghost Stories....

Purchased as a gift for my son. He enjoyed it (he needed it for his schooling, but had been previously interested, so it's very cool that he was able to weave those things together....)

My only issue, if at all, was that it arrived in a flimsy envelope and the front cover was bent. Of course that does not diminish the contents of the book, it was a bit of a tsk! as it was a gift. I wouldn't even mention this if I'd purchased it for myself. I'd just suggest that the seller be a little more aware of their mailing procedures.
