Not for everyone - a different approach to GMAT math

This book assumes a fair knowledge of GMAT math rules and principles. If you are a new test-taker and looking for your first book, this is probably not for you as you will be frustrated with a lack of a structured approach or basics overview. It is more of a finishing school than a primer. Just to give you an idea, the book opens up with mid/advanced level word problems.

On the other hand if you are getting above Q45, and have covered arithmetic, geometry formulas for circle area, you can definitely improve further. Here is what you will find inside:
- New approaches to questions that you may have struggled with or could not get, such as DS, Word Problems, Groups, or sets
- 200 realistic fresh GMAT questions (I had a few test my attention, such as prime integer questions)
- Time management improvements
- Good tips and reminders for a number of question types (yes/no DS questions, multi-answer DS)
- Suggests to avoid traps and careless mistakes due to division, skipping a step, or fraction error

Most of the questions in the book are worthwhile attention and will make you a better test-taker by either teaching you or exposing you to a type you may not be familiar with. The advice and techniques, however, will not apply to all of your questions on the Test, only the harder ones and only a fitting certain patterns. I would estimate that someone going for a score of Q49 or higher would get the benefit of these techniques on about half the questions. Someone shooting for Q44, probably only see hard questions that this book deals with in 33% of the cases. In addition, there is not much you can do with calculation questions of any difficulty - be it prime numbers, standard deviation, or permutations - those questions test your knowledge of formulas rather than logic.

Important to mention, the book is unorthodox - it is laid out differently from others (mentioned already), and does not follow a typical "teaching" plan; instead it focuses on certain areas, mistake areas, and question types. Some of the rules and strategies will be very different from what you have learned in other books or courses and your ability to use them will depend on how much you are willing to trust them and rely on them. As with any strategy, it is only good as long as you follow it. Make sure that whatever strategy you follow, you are comfortable with it.

Good concepts, poor layout

I have been studying for the GMAT for a while and when I saw this book available, I was super excited. I am a big fan of Max and couldn't wait to pick this up and learn some new techniques.

The concepts in the book are on point however, the book was edited really badly. The layout doesnt make sense, there are a ton of misprints and mistakes. The entire book seems like it was copy pasted from a Word document. This could have easily been avoided had a few test copies been floated to students. I could edit this book in a few hours and make the layout much more user friendly - this screams laziness.

Overall, it is a good book and if you want to pick up additional quant skills, I highly recommend it. Hopefully in future additions there will be a more thorough editing process.

Simply Stunning Personality

I always wanted to read biographies of people who shaped history - and without a doubt Martin Luther King was on my list. Though I bought this book few years ago, I finally got to read it.
I was nice to know how he put lot of emphasis in studies and writings from famous thinkers (mainly Thoreau) of his time. Gandhi's non-cooperation movement in India also influenced his idea-logy.
"We must keep God in the forefront. Let us be Christian in all our actions." he addresses the crowd gathered to protest racial segregation on the public transit system of Montgomery, Alabama during Dec 1, 1955. In one of his speeches he says "If we are wrong, justice is a lie. And we are determined here in Montgomery to work and fight until justice runs down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.". His personality to speak the right word without ever sowing a seed of hate among his followers to me simply is divine. And pursuing his mission with civil-disobedience without almost any violence and bloodshed speaks tons of his wisdom. This wisdom all along his struggle is well written in the book. It was a great read to understand how he shaped his impeccable personality sticking to ideas and not losing his wisdom and integrity till the end, he died when he was only 39 towering strength of will and character for that young age.

I learned a lot of history form this book

A Biography of Martin Luther King Jr.

I had always been interested in Martin Luther King Jr. I first became interested in Reverend King after hearing his famous speech "I have a dream". I enjoyed this book because I got to learn about how he came to become a great civil right leader, pastor and orator. When Martin was a young man attending mostly white school and colleges, he didn't want people to perceive of him as the stereotypical African American. He studied everything he could get his hands on and even pressed his own clothes daily. I enjoyed reading the chapter on his courting of Coretta Scott. Beginning with the Rosa Parks bus incident, and through Dr King's studies of Jesus and Gandhi, he was able to change the history of civil rights through mass civil disobedience and non-violence. It saddens me that Dr. King's life was cut short, but I am glad that he will always be remembered and discussed.

Too high level to be useful

This book is primarily for architects. It's covers a broad swath of ground in generic sweeping terms. When it does touch metal it covers the development of a web application for a tablet PC, which appears as largely unchanged from what it would look like in a standard web development environment.

The books first three chapters present an introduction and a business case for mobile computing. The fourth and fifth chapters provide a very high level overview of mobile devices and their variety. An example of the level of depth is on page 72 where the author writes; "Most, if not all, mobile devices have flat screens."

Chapters seven, eight and nine cover, again at a very high level, application design for almost any thin client application. It could be web, or mobile, or whatever.

Chapter ten covers the waterfall development model. Which I found really off tangent. I thought from here we would dig down. Instead we are building another information tower about project management and requirements gathering.

Chapter eleven is a case study which is at the level of UML, data model, page flow, and use cases. Chapters twelve and thirteen are also case studies at a similar level.

To get the "Full Microsoft .NET code examples for cell phones, Pocket PCs, and Tablet PCs" you need to go to Appendix B, which is the first sign of code in the book.

Can't say I recommend this book at all. At the level this book covers mobile development it is not significantly different from web development. And for front-line coders this book provides no practical insight whatsoever. I gave it two stars because it provides some interesting facts about mobile bandwidth, and because I find the writing to be better than average. Shame that they couldn't have delved deeper into this fascinating topic.

Definitive .NET Mobile Applications Book

This book is the definitive book for mobile .NET applications.

Although the authors are very experienced programmers, from HP, I disagree with some of their opinions. For example, I think one-tier applications are more scalable than three tier applications, whereas the authors of this book think the opposite.

Given that I do not agree on everything, the book is still complete, detailed, well thought out, and beyond doubt a first-rate coverage of mobile apps. I have not read a better book on mobile applications and especially if you are a .NET programmer, you will have a difficult time finding a better book on this topic.

Aside from some architectural disagreement, I also did not like the UML sprinkled in. I HATE UML. The authors cover scenario based solutions and chose UML to do it. As much as I HATE UML, I really like the scenario based writing. Too many books just cover the same thing as the API reference. This book covers everything the documentation does not. For example, when SOAP is useful and when it should be avoided.

I really believe that after reading the book, I will design better mobile applications and will have a broader view of mobile applications. Given that many mobile application projects fail or leave the project sponsor unsatisfied, this excellent book should be a definite read.

It's also nice to see a mobile application book that really focuses on .NET. There are awesome facilities in .NET that blow away Java/J2EE. This book points them out.

The book is not code heavy (after all that is obvious). Instead the book covers hard questions, like whether to use a data access layer or not and how to write a good one.

This book shows how to go for designing and developing mobile applications. This book is designed for all audiance, who are in mobile application development or would like to go for it. Person who haven't started mobile application and wants to know more about mobile technology can also go for this book.

This book cover all aspects of mobile application development starting from designing to deployment. Also cover the topic to how to prepare existing applications to support mobility. It also covers the security issue, which is very much important aspect of all application development.

This book is very good book who are taking start up project in mobile area and have very good experience in windows and webbased application. They just need to have concept or quick guide that they can find here in the book.

Overall, This is good book to have in your book shelf.

About the Author

Peter Lerangis is the author of more than one hundred and sixty books, which have sold more than five and half million copies and been translated into thirty-three different languages. These include the first four books in the New York Times bestselling Seven Wonders series, The Colossus Rises, Lost in Babylon, The Tomb of Shadows, and The Curse of the King, and two books in the 39 Clues series. Peter is a Harvard graduate with a degree in biochemistry. He has run a marathon and gone rock climbing during an earthquake—though not on the same day. He lives in New York City with his wife, musician Tina deVaron, and their two sons, Nick and Joe. In his spare time, he likes to eat chocolate.

About the Author
R.D. Laing, one of the best-known psychiatrists of modern times, was born in Glasgow in 1927. R.D. This is an excellent and entertaining book. You don't have to be a schizophrenic or psychology researcher to find value within its pages. I randomly ordered this book a few years ago - having never heard of Laing and having never read anything in this genera - and it is now one of my favorite books that I have ever read. Highly recommended for anyone with even the slightest interest. Laing takes case studies of an extremely complex phenomenon - the divided self- and breaks it down logically to such an extent that even comatose schizophrenia becomes completely understandable

Where "everything is suffused with nothingness"

The divided self like the divided mind, is an abstraction and like all things human, requires our compassion to understand. While The Divided Self is not a new book (around since 1959/1960) it remains to this day a ground breaking psychological study.
Who as a psychologist, philosopher, or student of literature has not come across the idea of the schizoid personality? Some even believe it is the plague of our times. For example, you can read, "The Shallows", "The Minimal Self", and "The Culture of Narcissism". This state of deepening fragmentation of the self manifests as the false self system, a sort of borderline psychoses. In this world where everything is "suffused with nothingness", the real self lays hidden just waiting for some penetrating soul to help it discover "It" is not really an "IT" but an "I".

Neat book

This is a really fun book. It shows the happenings of the inhabitants of an apartment building: 3 families, 1 movie star, an artist, and a scientist. Plus, you get to follow the days of the 2 workmen. Watch as the scientist's apartment blows up, reporters interview the movie star, one family has a party, another moves in, and many, many more events. This book is fun to look at again and again. You can follow the day of just one person, or check up on the doings of all the residents. It'd recommend it to anyone of any age.

A Day in the Life of an Apartment House

The Apartment Book is an oversize (11"x14") illustrated look into the daily life of an apartment building and its many residents. Each double page illustration shows a cutaway view of an old Victorian building that has five stories and a basement with six apartments. The residents vary, with three families on the first three floors, an actress and her maid on the fourth floor, and an artist and a crazy inventor in two small apartments on the fifth floor. The author has added the maintenance crew, a homeless person seeking temporary shelter, a couple of burglars, and even an alligator that prowls the sewers beneath the basement.

Each of the 14 illustrations shows the events in the house at different times of day, starting at 7 am and ending at one the following morning. The drawings are richly populated with interesting details and the dialog is neatly confined to the sidebars. This is a sumptuous treat for the visually inclined and the residents' stories will keep you interested to the very end. However, with all the activity depicted in this one day, it does not look like a place I would like to live in for long.

A Day in the Life of an Apartment House

This is a marvelously interesting book for children who thrive on visual learning. It is an oversize book that depicts the daily details of the lives of the inhabitants living in a several story apartment building, beginning at 7 am and ending late in the evening. Turn the pages to discover the timeline during the day and the progression of events. Visually stimulated children can take hours to note all the details and follow each storyline endlessly. My 5/6 year old grandchildren find this book fascinating as they discuss each storyline and note details ranging from rats in the sewer to odd hairdos of the inhabitants, details of the big party to the progression of the burglars, water leaks, broken clocks, expolosion by the mad scientist and art in the making. They use their imagination a lot to create other scenarios and conclusions for the inhabitants. We love it! Those who only wish ro 'read' a book, following the words, will most likely use this book only a time or two.

A great book, but it's more of an accessory than a necessity.

First, keep in mind that this work was published in 1981. Secondly, keep in mind that this is not about current scandals or conspiracies in the Church. If you are expecting a lot of discussion from Malachi Martin on the latest intrigue and outrage at Vatican II, this is not that book.

Here is what the book is.

Martin begins the book with a brief narration of the state of the Church pre-312. Then, he points out that Pope Silvester's deal with Emperor Constantine was the beginning of the Roman Catholic Church's troubles. By allowing the Church to become intertwined with the affairs of the Empire, the Church became chained to this temporal world's affairs and drawbacks, and incidentally, the papacy has become corrupted by the whole process.

Then, from that point, Martin points out various examples of how the Church has become corrupted throughout history. Several amazing episodes that intrigued me can be found on page 109 (the story of the perverted 12-year old Pope, Theophylact), pages 124-125 (the account of cardinal Cesare Borgia, who wore a mask to hide a deformity, employed a personal assassin, was bisexual, and assassinated his own brother), and page 182 (the lack of attention to Martin Luther, due to overconcern with the imperial power of the Church's papal states). I was surprised to see that Martin didn't cover the Crusades much, but that's a different topic altogether, I guess.

Toward the end of the book, in the final section titled Decline and Fall, Martin brings attention to the Church's situation in the last century. It is at this point that you become grateful to Martin for having shown you the previous centuries of Church history. You can view the Church's modern plight in the context of its imperfect history.

Now, in this last section, Malachi Martin does not bring on condemning remarks about Pope John Paul II, and he is hesitant to criticize Pope John XXIII for the post-modern revisions of Vatican II. Rather, Martin sums up the entire downward movement of the Church, likening it to a snowball rolling down a mountain, rolling out of control after a certain point in history. (Martin really did a great job illustrating Napoleon's role in the West's secularization, by the way.)

Ultimately, this is a great book. It is great because it is well written, well thought out, and tied together nicely. In addition, any time a person can get an opportunity to hear Malachi Martin's take on Church history, they should take it! Martin has a unique perspective on these matters, and he is worth your attention.

As you can probably tell by the Amazon.com prices for used copies, it is rather expensive. I'm guessing that this is a bit of a rare book. Somehow, I managed to pre-order my copy, and I got it for $12. The copy I got was a novel-sized paperback that was about 260 pages. The price on the spine of my book was $3.95! This little thing is surely not worth $70! Yet, buy it if you must--though I'd encourage you to search the libraries first.

If you absolutely must have a book of Malachi Martins, I'd suggest Hostage to the Devil. Decline and the Fall of the Roman Church is more of an accessory than anything. It is not as much as a necessity as his other books.

The History of the Popes.
By New Age of Barbarism
_The Decline and Fall of the Roman Church_ by the late traditionalist Roman Catholic priest Father Malachi Martin is a fascinating account of the history of the church progressing from the earliest beginnings to Constantine's eventual relationship with the church during the reign of Pope Silvester I up until the post Vatican II popes and Pope John Paul II. The book shows the transformations that took place in the papacy as the relationship between temporal power and spiritual authority was worked out throughout the years. Also, the book shows how the early popes were chosen, including how many were appointed by kings or their predecessors (often involving intrigue and poisonings), up until the invention of the conclave. While the Roman Popes certainly were not impeccable, their spiritual authority in matters of faith and morals is guarranteed by the words of Christ himself. Much of this book is spent reviewing the many scandals and intrigues of the popes who often acted in a manner more befitting a petty despot than the spiritual authority of the world's strongest religion. Father Malachi Martin's thesis is that the church exists in a state of steady decline, brought about by a defection from its true principles, and an abandonment of spiritual authority for temporal power. Indeed, the sins of man are many, due to his fallen nature, and throughout the centuries they have come to corrode the very structures upon which Christ built his church. This book, written in 1981 is somewhat dated but its prophecy for the coming decades remains valid. The complications which have arisen since the Second Vatican Counsel, the brazen disobedience of Christ's supposed faithful to the authority of the pope and his predecessors, the collusion of the hierarchy with liberalism, modernism, and Marxist revolution, and the moral decline of the modern age are issues which currently confront the church more than ever. Perhaps the modern age can be made sense of in terms of prophecy by rereading those prophecies of the saints which reveal a hidden meaning behind historical events. I regret only that the author did not provide adequate footnotes to his book so that his facts could be checked against standard sources. He appears to take some liberty with things that may be unjustifiable. Nevertheless, for its important remarks concerning the coming and continuing crises within the church (recently brought to light in the many scandals among the priesthood and the hierarchy) this book remains of fundamental interest to all who want to understand the history and progression of the Roman Catholic Church and its papacy.

An insider's critique

As a Protestant it is easy for me to list the flaws of the Catholic church. When a Roman Catholic priest writes a book that casts a critical eye at the church, what he writes is far more credible. Such is "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Church," by the late Jesuit Malachi Martin.

The thesis of this book is straightforward. Beginning with a description of the Faustian bargain between Emperor Constantine and Pope Sylvester, Martin goes on to describe the steps by which the church not only gained temporal power but made progressively stronger claims regarding its authority over all earthly powers, including the civil rulers, in its attempt to gain full control of what it regarded as Christendom. We read, for example, of the crowning of Charlemagne by Leo III on Christmas Day 800, an event that marked the birth of what became the Holy Roman Empire. Although one might see this as a moment of triumph for the civil ruler, it was really a victory for the papacy. By giving the pope the authority to install the civil ruler in his position, it symbolized the authority of the pope over the ruler.

Thus the power of the papacy continued to grow through the time of Gregory V and his humiliation of Henry IV at Canossa, through the reign of Innocent III, when, by all accounts the power of the pope was at its zenith, until the time of Boniface VIII, when the pretentious claims of "Unam Sanctum" for the power of the sword of the church over the temporal sword could no longer be backed up and Boniface suffered his own humiliation.

Thankfully, the history of the papacy does not end there. As Martin fully acknowledges, the papacy's understanding of its power has changed under the guidance of recent popes. In particular, he notes how Paul VI and his successors have replaced the idea of the church as a kingdom with that of an institution that has been uniquely called as a servant of "the people of God."
