Disappointed
By Nema Grace
I ordered this for our 4yr old going off to school and didn't read it first. As we read it together, I didn't like the constant references to "what will they think of my clothes?" "what will they think of me?" (rather than worrying about anything of more importance) until the end, when it dawned on me that the little girl was really the teacher.......however, the 4 yr old didn't make the connection at all and I doubt if any 4 0r 5 yr old would. I returned the book, feeling that it was a bit too confusing for this age group.

My four-year-old daughter loves it.
By F. Bridgeford
Absolutely loved this book! My 4 year old daughter had me read it over & over again. The storyline & artwork were tied together extremely tightly; the drawings matched the story very well.

This book clearly shows the various anxieties that a child would have going to school, and that they really are the same as "some grown-ups".

My daughter loved it. The story led her to ask questions about grown-ups and express her nervousness about starting school, as well as her understanding that EVERYONE, including adults, experience the same anxieties.

My wife, an elementary school teacher, also loved this book.

Very well written book.
If a four year old can relate, comprehend & make the connections between her life, and that of which is in the story, the effectiveness of the author is obvious.

Great twist!
By Jennifer Keane
I loved this book for my daughter starting pre-school. She was so suprised at the end as I was too! I brought it to work with me (I'm a Language Arts teacher) to share with our Kinder teachers and decided to read it to my middle school students. They thought it was so cool that the narrator was the teacher! (Of course we discussed literary elements to make it relevant to them.) My Assistant Principal happened to stop in when I was reading it and she adored the book and wants to order it for the school library. I thought it was very creative and I hope to see more books from this author!

The Life, Music and Thought of Woody Guthrie: A Critical Appraisal (Ashgate Popular and Folk Music Series)From Brand: Ashgate Pub Co

Woodrow Wilson Guthrie (1912-67) has had an immense impact on popular culture throughout the world. His folk music brought traditional song from the rural communities of the American southwest to the urban American listener and, through the global influence of American culture, to listeners and musicians alike throughout Europe and the Americas. Similarly, his use of music as a medium of social and political protest has created a new strategy for campaigners in many countries. But Guthrie's music was only one aspect of his multifaceted life. His labour-union activism helped embolden the American working class, and united such distinct groups as the rural poor, the urban proletariat, merchant seamen and military draftees, contributing to the general call for workers' rights during the 1930s and 1940s. As well as penning hundreds of songs (both recorded and unrecorded), Guthrie was also a prolific writer of non-sung prose, writing regularly for the American communist press, producing volumes of autobiographical writings and writing hundreds of letters to family, friends and public figures. Furthermore, beyond music Guthrie also expressed his creative talents through his numerous pen-and-ink sketches, a number of paintings and occasional forays into poetry. This collection provides a rigorous examination of Guthrie's cultural significance and an evaluation of both his contemporary and posthumous impact on American culture and international folk-culture. The volume utilizes the rich resources presented by the Woody Guthrie Foundation.

Review
Classified as 'Research Essential' by Baker & Taylor YBP Library Services A Yankee Book Peddler UK Core Title for 2011 'Making excellent use of material from the Woody Guthrie Foundation and Archives in New York, this book examines Woody's image, his songwriting, his politics and his friendships. In the process, a few myths are questioned and some new dimensions of his life and work are revealed. The result is a welcome portrait of Woody as a twentieth century figure with much to offer to the twenty-first. The book serves as an excellent introduction to Guthrie's work as well as providing unexpected perspectives even for those of us who thought we knew all about him.' Dave Laing, Institute of Popular Music, University of Liverpool, UK '... a welcome addition to the scholarly literature. It should especially interest students of American folk music and American culture... Recommended.' Choice 'The contributors to this fantastic edited volume effectively answer the questions posed by Jorge Arevalo Mateus in the foreword: "What is the source of Guthrie's enduring cultural value? Why are artists and academics alike drawn to the mythology and reality of his life and times?". Using recent and traditional analytical frameworks from a variety of disciplines, these scholars unpack Guthrie's expressive practices, iconicity, and political aesthetics. This volume ushers in a new generation of scholarship in "Guthrie Studies". This book would be helpful in both undergraduate classes and graduate seminars. Classes that focus on the formation of artist identities, twentieth-century American popular music, the Dust Bowl, music and migration, and Bob Dylan would find many articles in this volume enlightening.' Journal of Folklore Research 'In every sense an excellent book, exciting, surprising and enlightening!' Folker 'This collection of essays contains a considerable wealth of information about Woody Guthrie: his music, his political principles, and his life and work beyond writing and performing songs, are all explored in detail. Much of this detail debunks myths about Guthrie, while exploring the creation and persistence of such myths. The book examines these subjects from the perspective of Guthrie's songs, his self-mythologizing, and his relationships with some of the most important figures who contributed to his life and work. The result is an engrossing [...] study of one of the most important figures in twentieth century popular culture.' Popular Music History 'This is thrilling and illuminative, sometimes surprising. Legends and myths are questioned and new insight uncovered.' FolkWorld '... the book offers some fascinating glimpses into the wealth of material in the Woody Guthrie Archives and the variety of ways in which his work could be interpreted...' Journal of American Studies 'This is a fine collection and a wonderful tribute to the life and career of Woody Guthrie. There is a mellifluous continuity between the chapters and sections that accumulates to a greater understanding of Guthrie's talent and political worldview; it is also, primarily in its first part and due in the main to its editorial provenance, an important scholarly contribution to a utopian understanding not just of Guthrie in particular but of popular musical culture.' Utopian Studies 'Serious students of Guthrie and American folk music will want this book - the contributors to a man (yes, they all are men) exhibit a tremendous command of the primary and secondary literature, and their interpretations dig deep.' American Music Review

From School Library Journal
Gr 5–8—Fans won't be disappointed as the cliff-hanger ending from the previous book, The Mark of Athena (Hyperion, 2012), leads to further exciting adventures by the intrepid demigods in this penultimate book in the "Heroes of Olympus" series. Annabeth and Percy have fallen down into Tantarus, and they must fight off the attacks from the monsters stuck there long enough to find the Doors of Death. The other five demigods must get to Eprius in Greece, find the House of Hades to open the Doors of Death on the mortal side, save Annabeth and Percy, and seal the entrance to stop Gaea's forces from escaping into the mortal world and destroying it. The Gods are incapacitated by their Greek and Roman personalities warring with one another, and the demigods from Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter are on the verge of an all-out war. As Annabeth and Percy struggle to survive Tantarus's poisonous atmosphere and creatures, the other demigods must undergo harsh trials-particularly Hazel, Frank, and Leo, but they learn and grow mentally and physically from their experiences. The heroes realize that they cannot change their parentage but they can control their legacy. While more serious than the previous titles, there are lighthearted moments here, many involving a farting polecat. The horrifying monsters are nicely balanced by peace-loving Titan Bob, a skeleton calico cat called Small Bob, and gentle giant Damasen. Fans will be thrilled to know the series continues with The Blood of Olympus in 2014.—Sharon Rawlins, New Jersey State Library, Trenton

From Booklist
For Percy Jackson fans, it’s been a long year since the cliffhanger at the end of The Mark of Athena (2012). Now Riordan picks up the story and carries it to a rewarding conclusion, with the main set of characters reunited and preparing themselves for the final showdown with Gaea. Throughout the book, Percy and Annabeth make their harrowing way through the underworld to the Doors of Death. Meanwhile, Hazel, Leo, Frank, Piper, Jason, Nico, and Reyna endure their own perils, all the way through to the story’s climax. In addition to experiencing growth spurts, several of the teen demigods take significant steps toward understanding their powers, accepting their feelings, trusting each other, and taking responsibility for leadership. Adventure fans will relish the action as their heroes confront formidable foes, while readers who have come to love the characters will enjoy following the different individuals as they take the stage in scenes that are usually dramatic, often witty, and occasionally surprising. A satisfying, penultimate entry in the Heroes of Olympus series. Grades 6-9. --Carolyn Phelan

Review
Gr 5-8 Fans won't be disappointed as the cliff-hanger ending from the previous book, The Mark of Athena (Hyperion, 2012), leads to further exciting adventures by the intrepid demigods in this penultimate book in the "Heroes of Olympus" series. As Annabeth and Percy struggle to survive Tantarus's poisonous atmosphere and creatures, the other demigods must undergo harsh trials particularly Hazel, Frank, and Leo, but they learn and grow mentally and physically from their experiences. Fans will be thrilled to know the series continues with The Blood of Olympus in 2014. Sharon Rawlins, New Jersey State Library, Trenton SLJ"

Having plunged into Tartarus at the end of the last book, The Mark of Athena (2013), Percy and Annabeth struggle toward the Doors of Death, while their friends hurry to meet them on the other side at the titular House of Hades. Riordan is most successful in his evocation of Tartarus and its hellish, monster-infested landscape. Without lightening his heroes' miseries in any way, the author provides a helper and necessary mood-lifter in the person of Iapetus/Bob, the Titan whose memory Percy had obliterated with the waters of Lethe in a previous adventure. Now Hades' janitor, Bob, along with a skeletal saber-tooth kitten he names Small Bob, joins Percy and Annabeth on their trek, causing them both to plumb unexpected moral depths. Meanwhile, on board (and off) the Argo II, Jason, Piper, Leo, Hazel and Frank similarly must come to understand themselves better in order to accomplish the tasks set before them (though not to equal extents). Though Riordan doesn't stint on action or laughs (fart jokes abound, and a tart-tongued Calypso is a special treat), readers may find themselves appreciating these moments of contemplation all the more for the depth of characterization they reveal. The denouement finds the demigods poised for the final battle with Gaea and her minions; they have exactly 14 days to save the world. In this adventure, victories are hard-won and the essence of bravery nuanced, making the journey as satisfying as it is entertaining. (Fantasy. 10-14) Kirkus"

Another amazing installment for Percy & Co.!!!
By Jaded_Gal
I started buying Rick Riordan's books with the intention of using them to read to my son, who was 5 yrs old at the time. My "plan" was to show him just how much fun reading (or having a book read to you) is & how a good book could capture your mind.

It worked. We stated with the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series, quickly moved on to The Kane Chronicles & by the time the Lost Heroes of Olympus series was starting my son, now 8, reads them himself. As a child diagnosed with ADHD at age 5, my son loved that all the demigods had ADHD & the reasoning/explanations that came with it.

Normally, as a bibliophile I am 1 of "those people" who has the next installment in a book series in my hands the day it comes out. My work schedule has been hectic so the release date of The House of Hades came & went without my notice.....UNTIL I was wandering through a store & there it was on the shelf. I bought it immediately, all the while kicking myself that I'd forgotten. See, I started buying them for my son, but I quickly came to adore the books as much as him, reading them in quick succession.

-----------POSSIBLE SPOILERS-----------
In my opinion, Riordan has done it AGAIN. I gotta tell you, this man is BRILLIANT. I'm always blown away by the fluid nature of his writing, the way Riordan seemingly has endless ideas that pour forth in his books. As a reader, just when you start to think, "there's not really anywhere else he can go", BAM, he pulls a new & terrific storyline out of his hat. Impossibly, it's always more exciting than the last.

I've read on a few blogs & book boards that the next installment in The Lost Heroes of Olympus may be the final tome in the adventures of Percy & friends. If this is true, I'll be deeply saddened & will miss Percy & his cohorts deeply, as will my son. But like J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, there comes a point where story lines, even those with beloved characters, must come to a close. Should the 5th book in TLHO series be the final one, I'll be sad, but Percy & his friends have had an epic run, I'm just glad I was able to share in it.

The House of Hades picks up where The Mark of Athena left off, you have Percy & Annabeth endlessly falling (at least to them, it feels that way) to Tartarus. The rest of the crew Leo, Piper, Jason, Frank, Hazel, Nico & Coach Hodge are left to stop the the Greek/Roman war between the camps AND reach the Doors of Death in the Mortal world, helping to rescue Percy & Annabeth while closing the Doors of Death to Gaea forces.

As usual the POV is switched up between characters, with Nico being the only 1 to not have a POV chapter. Sure, Nico is featured many times in others POV, but never his own. We get to know Hazel quite a bit more this time around, learning exactly how important her presence IS to this mission. As not only a child of Pluto/Hades, she also is strongly connected to Hecate & can influence the Mist & magic.

Piper shines in this book as well, this time around she's no longer a "damsel in distress" but a young lady learning her way in the world, seeing her value as a fighter & asset to the quest & not just another pretty face. I'd say that this installment really shows off some girl power, developing Hazel & Piper beautifully. This time the girls don't need rescuing, they're saving themselves, as well as the boys.

Frank finally comes into his own here too. No longer a chubby, awkward kid who can turn into various animals, Frank embraces his true power & transform into his true self. Thus results in a stronger, more certain Frank, a leader, not a follower. Frank also experiences a physical transformation as well, almost like he went through puberty to older teenager in an instant. This occurrence really helps Frank to be more confident & embrace his heritage as a child of Ares.

Leo grows up as well, finally meeting a girl to take his mind off the unattainable Hazel when he's catapulted to Ogygia by Khione & meets Calypso. At first Calypso isn't impressed & due to a magical "defect", the island won't provide a raft to take Leo away from the island. What results is Calypso learning to care for Leo as he falls for her, ending in a raft taking Leo away from Calypso with Leo swearing on the River Styx he will come back to get her, even though according to Calypso, no man finds Ogygia twice. The end result is a more mature, heartsick Leo, still a joker, but obviously more grounded. His focus removed from Hazel, Leo & Frank actually become friends after this.

Jason, well, I feel I know his character the LEAST of all. He has POV chapters & the most impact filled scenes with Nico, but other than that? All I can tell you is that Jason chooses the Greek side, away from his Roman roots, changing his role in a key battle at the end. He's Pipers boyfriend. Other than that, don't really understand his character. I wish he was written in a way that I'd connect to him better.

Percy & Annabeth, oh I LOVE THEM. During their shifting POV monologues, the majority of the time they are struggling together to survive Tartarus to find the Doors of Death. Instead of the headstrong, always has fight in him Percy & the calm, can talk/think her way out of anything Annabeth, we see a much more reserved duo. Several times you think they might be ready to give up, but they always pull it out, in many cases, the nick of time. With the help of former foes, Percy & Annabeth are able to keep fighting to their goal.

Coach Hodge, I really like this over the top saytr. While he doesn't have a POV chapter & is still in the background, he adds much comedy relief to his appearances. We definitely learn more about Coach Hodge & that NO, fighting is not the only thing in the world to him. Something (someone) else means more.

!!!!!!!BIG FREAKING DEFINITE SPOILERS!!!!!!!
Nico, oh my poor misunderstood Nico. This next part of my review is a BIG hot button topic, one plenty of parents were very upset about. In previous books, we thought Nico was so standoffish to Percy/Annabeth BECAUSE Nico liked Annabeth & was jealous of Percy. Nope. We were wrong. Now flip that. In a POV of Jason Grace, Nico accompanies him to retrieve a scepter & they end up having to see Cupid to get that scepter. A god Nico is terribly afraid of. Because Nico has a crush/thing/love for PERCY. One he has to admit to Cupid, in front of Jason Grace.

Yep, Nico is GAY. Personally, this isn't a deal breaker for me. I have no intention of boycotting or burning my Riordan books. I will still recommend them to friends w/ children my sons age or younger. I think people are getting out of hand being so upset about this. There isn't a graphic fantasy love scene, just the reveal. Many parents are complaining because they have 5, 6, 7 year olds reading the books & didn't want to have "that" conversation yet, b/c at 10, the age Nico developed the crush, parents are saying it's not possible to "know" if you're gay. I can't answer that, but I do know that many studies have shown that it's an inborn thing in the brain. You don't choose it, you just are or aren't. It's just a part of the persons being. As to explaining to your younger kids? I had that conversation when my son started kindergarten. Only because these days, kids are discovering things earlier & I'd rather my son know the truth, not some horribly incorrect version a friend tells him. Because they do THAT TOO. I didn't go into huge detail, but I did explain the difference between hetero & gay. I also asked him what mattered most, the type of person you want to date or the type of person that you ARE. I have several gay friends & they are some of the loveliest people I've ever known. I asked my son, "isn't that more important, that they're good, kind, loving people"? Doesn't that mean more than who they choose to love? He totally agreed & understood the concept, at 6 years old. Parents, you don't have to get into gory details/explanations to make a point or explain something. Simple is best.

You could also use your common sense & think, Percy's adventures have been getting darker as he gets older. The kids who started with the first series are in their teens now so heavier subject matter is to be expected. Plus the reading age is 10+ in the description.

I don't think Riordan is "jumping on the bandwagon", I think he's representing a sampling from all backgrounds. You have Caucasian, African-American, American-Indian, Asian-American, Latino, it's covered. Making Nico gay wasn't to be risqu, it was completing the tapestry of diversity Riordan is so accomplished at creating. I applaud him for it, my hat is off to you sir.

Parents- you need to remember that your children learn SO MUCH from YOU. Most importantly, TOLERANCE. Then understanding. If your afraid of this reveal of a story character being gay, you're telling your children that your afraid of gay people. A group that's done nothing to you. Your teaching your children to be afraid of it, to be un-accepting of it, to have no TOLERANCE or UNDERSTANDING. Not just of gay people either, this lesson could extend so much farther & deeper than you imagine. So don't teach it. Explain to your kids in a short, concise, matter of fact way what being gay IS & leave it at that. Don't teach them it's okay to be afraid of it or to shun people who are. That wrong on so many levels. Besides, wouldn't you rather your kids learn important things like this from YOU?

All in all I LOVED THIS BOOK. Can't wait for the next one! Bravo mr Riordan!!!! 5stars all the WAY!!!!!

Maci and Zoe's Review
By Maci and Zoe Read Books
This book is amazing! I had been looking forward to it since mark of Athena came out, it did not disappoint me. I could not put it down and read it in three days. I loved how the doors of death worked like an elevator. The book just kept on amazing me, it really makes you think about the characters. You learn something new about them with every page there was a huge surprise that I never ever would have expected. When I finished it and really thought about it, it made me sad to think about what had to happen. I even got a new favorite quote from it. Although it is at the end of the book so I can not say it. I really enjoyed reading this book and will truly miss the fun and diverse characters.

Tartarus is Terrifying
By Jo Michaels
I took my daughter to Barnes and Noble to get her some books for her birthday and saw The House of Hades on the table near the children's section. Of course, I grabbed it because I've been waiting for it to come out for a year. That cliffhanger at the end of Mark of Athena made me crazy and I was salivating to find out what Tartarus was like. Riordan really hit the nail on the head with that lead-in. Without blabbering anymore, here's my review!

From a reader's perspective:
I love Percy and Annabeth, Hazel and Frank, and Jason and Piper; but, my favorite character by far is Leo. For some reason, he and I click. I was so happy when he got shot off the Argo II and into oblivion in this book because what happened to him is something he's deserved for a long time. Making me care about a character is something I look for in any book I read. Riordan does a great job of helping me connect with these kids. I've read about them all for so long, they feel like friends. Pacing in this book was excellent and the tension was so high, I turned the page without even thinking about it. I blew through it in just over 24 hours. Gaea, one of my favorite goddesses, is becoming one of my least favorite. She has such an evil side! At times, I want to slap her earthy face. I loved the re-introduction of Bob. He provided much needed comic relief in times of extreme stress. World building was off the charts amazing and I felt like I was right there with the teens as they fought.

From an editor's perspective:
I found a number of dropped words in this book. This is something I'd expect to find more in non-traditionally published books. It threw me out of the story more than once. Other than that, the writing was spot on.

My rating:
+ 1 Star for awesome world building
+ 1 Star for making me laugh out loud
+ 1 Star for giving me characters I could care about
+ 1 Star for keeping me engaged and great pacing
+ .5 Star for writing
- .5 Star for so many dropped words.

Overall, 4.5 out of 5 stars. Of course, I round up when clicking the stars on the review so this one will get a 5. Recommended to anyone who loves Mythology and is looking for a fantastic series.

Eric II The Encyclopedia of Roman Imperial Coins, by Rasiel Suarez

The release of ERIC II follows five years of intensive work in going well beyond the scope of the first edition. Where 2005's ERIC provided a solid introduction into the field of Roman coinage this followup aims for a much higher ambition with a fully comprehensive catalog of even the most obscure issues while maintaining the user-friendly format of the original. Also retained and significantly enhanced is the use of high-resolution color photography from cover to cover. The plates for each ruler have been upgraded with better and more photos with the rest of each section making rich use of color elsewhere. The listings are now more informative and are internally referenced with pertinent ancillary data. A significant improvement has been made in extending the catalog over the entire Byzantine series thus covering the complete span of coinage from the days of Augustus through the downfall of Constantine XI some 1,500 years later. Numbering some 60,000 entries, this landmark work marks the first occasion such a wide swath of numismatics has been covered in a single volume.

From Library Journal:

Although twice the page count of the 2005 edition, ERIC II is not just an extension of its predecessor. It is a fundamental revision and scope expansion, including 60,000 entries that incorporate essential numismatic esoterica. The foremost subject resource since H. Cohen's eight-volume Description historique des monnaies frappes sous l'Empire Romain of 1880-1892, ERIC II covers the 1500-year period between Augustus and the 1453 fall of Constantinople. Opening with an informative introduction that explains denominations and mint marks, Suarez (ERIC I) divides his subject into 15 chronologically organized chapters, surveying the ruling culture and detailing each imperial coin's minted permutations. An absolutely vital guide for numismatists.

Excellent One Volume Reference!
By Brian Rowe
Mr. Suarez has managed to pack a huge amount of information into a one volume tome. Spanning some 1480 years in 1455 pages, he has managed to provide a brief biography of each Roman and Byzantine emperor, empress, Ceasar and family member for whom coins were issued. Along with a short commentary regarding value and entry level pricing for coins, he has also broken down average prices for each denomination from ebay and other auctions. This will help give the collector an idea what these types of coins generally sold for up to the time of printing, though it should not be confused with a price guide as it is not. Neither is it just a basic work on historical or market analysis. It's strength and utility lies within the taxonomic compilation of over 60,000 coins (many in full color and enlarged) with a listing of obverse and reverse legends, type description and the very useful compilation of bust, obverse, reverse, type, mint and control device combinations with corresponding minting date and major reference listing. Combining basic academic information into a book with coffee table appeal, Mr. Suarez has produced a beautiful and very useful numismatic tool.

So what is it good for?

For the general collector, it is a great first reference for identification, attribution and useful for beginning further research on emperors, Roman and Byzantine coins, or to find major references.

For the dealer, it is useful as a quick reference guide and great for pulling out quick descriptions if not already known in full (provided you don't put it back on the shelf much, it is heavy at 9.4 pounds).

For the researcher, it is a fast reference to check attributions, control devices and useful with preliminary die studies.

A excellent numismatic research tool and aid! It should be an essential part of any ancient numismatic library.

A Comprehensive, Definitive and Beautiful Reference
By Sherry Briggs
ERIC II is huge, it is true, but that's because it is packed full of extensive information on Roman Imperial coins including those of the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire). We have come a long way from the hand done line drawings seen in some earlier works. Not only are all images photographs, but they are also in color. For years I have regretted having neither the money nor the shelf space for the multi-volume RIC, but now, no more. In addition, the author uses language that is preeminently approachable and down-to-earth. I was especially taken with the pictures of his family at the beginning! This review comes with a good deal of gratitude to Rasiel Suarez for having produced this work. The numismatic community will long benefit from this (very tasty) fruit of his labors.

Best single reference for collectors
By Nola Cliff
My ancient coin books now take up about 30 linear inches of bookshelf. However, the book I reach for most frequently has consistently been ERIC I. Last week I received my copy of ERIC II and have been overwhelmed by it. It's huge, beautiful, and very user friendly. It is easily the most visually-appealing ancient coin book I have ever laid eyes upon. Already, my well-worn copy of ERIC I is getting lonely on the shelf.

This book is highly recommended for ancient coin collectors, particularly those who are getting tired of the limited and often incorrect info online. The book does not replace key references such as Sear, but it's a great place to start for collectors looking for a single text to attribute virtually all of their Roman and Byzantine coins. Experienced collectors should also enjoy gawking at all of the beautiful full-color photos that make browsing the book a visual pleasure.

A Love Song To Experience
By Priscilla C. Johnson (Cilla)
Shiree McCarver brings readers a very interesting story of romance in J-Pop Love Song. Charlene Alfred is about to embark on a new career. She is already a successful songwriter and best-selling romance author. Her first book, Blu's Diary, is being made into a motion picture and she is in the middle of screening actors for the lead male role. However, the financial backers have already decided who would have the role, Japanese pop star, Kane. Kane is young, sexy and perfect for the role. But Charlene believes he is too young and inexperienced to portray Blu's true character.

Kane has been performing on the stage since the age of 12. Eager to get from under the thumb of his manager/mentor, Takusa, Kane would do almost anything to be a part of this film. There is also something about Charlene that has been haunting him since he was 16 years old and he read her book. After convincing Charlene to come to Japan to meet him in person, Kane realizes that he is in love with her and he sets out to win her heart.

Set in Tokyo, McCarver introduces readers to Japanese culture. This story is about an African American woman and Japanese Man. It is about an older woman and a younger man. It is about western cultures mixing with eastern cultures. It is about forbidden love. It is about secrets and traditions and so much more. McCarver packed a lot in 280 pages but it was well worth reading. I cheered and cried with Charlene and Kane as they discovered their love for each other and struggled with secrets that tried to keep them apart. McCarver did an excellent job of explaining the culture and language for readers. This book is recommended for book clubs that are looking for a different type of romance that will spark plenty of discussion.

Started Out Promising and Then Fizzled...
By Ray
I'm sorry, but this book was absolutely awful. As mentioned before the editing was very poorly done. I've never read a book with so many obvious grammatical and spelling errors. "Here" spelled as "hear", improper verb usages, characters names and professions changing the list goes on. There were also several plot holes in the story and many scenes were poorly developed and rushed. I applaud the author for "attempting" to write a story that breaks the stereotypical romantic pairings of most novels. But this book leaves much to be desired.

Poor book editing, otherwise an intriguing premise for a love story
By MidoriC
First, I have to say that as I'm writing this, I am not currently finished with this book. Perhaps once I am, I can write a more fully-rounded review of the story itself. That said, and before anyone criticizes me for reviewing this on what seems to be a premature note, I am frankly wondering if anyone edited this book before it went to press. I am having a difficult time enjoying the nuances of the plot, simply because of the poor grammar, tense usage and punctuation issues that continually riddle this book as I'm reading it, which is why I'm writing this review now. I'm sorry to sound as if this overshadows anything else about this book, but it's annoying to have to reread a sentence simply because punctuation placed where it doesn't belong, or not placed where it does, renders it senseless.

That said, as a writer myself, as well as being a nearly forty year old Japanese-American who's very much a fangirl of Gackt and Hyde (two of the influences Ms. McCarver cited in her dedication at the beginning of the book), I can definitely relate to aspects of this plotline. I first saw this book advertised in an issue of Romantic Times magazine, and was intrigued because I've long searched high and low for contemporary romance among Asian people, and more specifically, Japanese people. I agree with the male love interest, Japanese pop star Kane, who says that Japanese men are horribly steriotyped. (For more on Asian steriotyping, check out The Asian Mystique: Dragon Ladies, Geisha Girls, & Our Fantasies of the Exotic Orient) I'm hoping as I go along that Ms. McCarver manages to banish said steriotypes and creates what promises to be a wonderful love story.

That is, however, if I can attempt to ignore the glaringly obvious lack of editing. Thank you, though, to Ms. McCarver, for writing an entire novel in which my culture and my people are prominent.

Children of Facundo: Caudillo and Gaucho Insurgency during the Argentine State-Formation Process (La Rioja, 1853-1870), by Ariel de la Fue

In Children of Facundo Ariel de la Fuente examines postindependence Argentinian instability and political struggle from the perspective of the rural lower classes. As the first comprehensive regional study to explore nineteenth-century society, culture, and politics in the Argentine interior—where more than 50 percent of the population lived at the time—the book departs from the predominant Buenos Aires-centered historiography to analyze this crucial period in the processes of state- and nation-building.
La Rioja, a province in the northwest section of the country, was the land of the caudillos immortalized by Domingo F. Sarmiento, particularly in his foundational and controversial book Facundo. De la Fuente focuses on the repeated rebellions in this district during the 1860s, when Federalist caudillos and their followers, the gauchos, rose up against the new Unitarian government. In this social and cultural analysis, de la Fuente argues that the conflict was not a factional struggle between two ideologically identical sectors of the elite, as commonly depicted. Instead, he believes, the struggle should be seen from the perspective of the lower-class gauchos, for whom Unitarianism and Federalism were highly differentiated party identities that represented different experiences during the nineteenth century. To reconstruct this rural political culture de la Fuente relies on sources that heretofore have been little used in the study of nineteenth-century Latin American politics, most notably a rich folklore collection of popular political songs, folktales, testimonies, and superstitions passed down by old gauchos who had been witnesses or protagonists of the rebellions. Criminal trial records, private diaries, and land censuses add to the originality of de la Fuente’s study, while also providing a new perspective on Sarmiento’s works, including the classic Facundo.
This book will interest those specializing in Latin American history, literature, politics, and rural issues.

Review
“Children of Facundo will stand at the forefront of works on what is arguably the single most important topic among contemporary Latin American historians: the lower classes and nation-state formation. This is history from below at its best.”—Charles Walker, author of Smoldering Ashes: Cuzco and the Creation of Republican Peru, 1780–1840

“De la Fuente has gone beyond integrating the subjects and issues of previous works on the subject in this methodologically sophisticated historiographic project: he has enriched them with important new insights. This contribution will be welcomed by specialists in the field.”—Tulio Halpern Donghi, author of The Contemporary History of Latin America

“What a splendid book! Children of Facundo is sure to become one of the touchstones in the study of politics and society in nineteenth-century Latin America.”—Jeremy Adelman, Princeton University

A new approach to history
By Concerned US Citizen
This is a study of the disharmony between the Federalists and Unitarians in the province of La Rioja and to a lesser extent the whole of Argentina during the political formative years of 1853 to 1870. The heart of the work is contained in the 1860's when the Federalist Caudillos of La Rioja led rebellions against the government of the Unitarians of Buenos Aires. The nature of the disunity and the outcome are examined from the perspective that the significant regional and societal uniqueness of the Riojana aristocracy and the relationship with the gauchos was the major ingredient for change. The two party interests and alignments created platforms, Unitarismo and Federalismo, that were diametrically opposed. De la Fuente tells this story from the perspective of the commonfolk - the gauchos. Ariel de la Fuente begins his study with an analysis of the Caudillos and the causes that led to the formation of the National State of Argentina and moves quickly in placing the Unitarians and Federalists under the microscope. In this second chapter the author furthers his argument that the significance of the interior residents away from the urban center of Buenos Aires, fully one-half of Argentina's populace at that time, with its repeated rebellions against the Unitarian government impacted the political formation more than any other movement. The fourth chapter, "Gauchos, Montoneros and Montoneras" is a provocative dissection of these people and their modes of rebellion, which is followed up by the fifth chapter's explanation of how the Caudillos (Federalists) were able to cement their own movement. It is not until the sixth chapter that the author's creative usage of political jingles and folklore really becomes apparent. This original use of popular political ditties and folkloric tales is essential to the overarching thesis that it was outside of Buenos Aires that the most significant political growth and change occurred. Ariel de la Fuente does not rely solely upon these postmodernist tradition parcels for his evidence. There is an abundance of the traditionalist primary source materials, such as land records, court documents, and diaries, which will no doubt appease those who find it difficult to accept as hard evidence the oral traditions and folktales in explaining the successful political outcome for the Federalists. The author recognizes that success of the Federalist's movement was due in no small part with the gauchos' ability to become more than an ostensible member of the political process. De la Fuente has assembled a masterful piece of historiographical text that will excite historians of this field, furthermore, this re-worked dissertation is also of enough literary quality that bookstore browsers and history aficionados will not be intimidated. The openness of the text is a reflection of the liberal nature of the source material and the creative strength of the author's interpretive ability. This is without exception a scholarly publication, which might overwhelm the lay person at different intervals. The final two chapters demand that the reader have at the very least a working knowledge of the historical background Argentina, both in political terms and social constructs. Without some grounding in this area it is easy to fall victim to the author's opinions alone. For any students of Latin American/South American history Children of Facundo provides an intimate regional history that is well thought and cogently argued. More attention and explanation might have been made in regard to the songs, stories and oral culture earlier on in the book. After reading chapter six, I connected much better with the first half of the study. This may simply be a matter of personal taste, but I prefer a breakdown of the ethnic structure early on in this type of study, this allows me to create better mental images of the society throughout the read. By the end of the book I had no difficulty in accepting De la Fuente's process of argument and his overall conclusion, this work is a success.

About the Author

A native and current resident of Southern California, Suzanne Enoch loves movies almost as much as she loves books, with a special place in her heart for anything Star Wars. She has written more than thirty Regency novels and historical romances, which are regularly found on the New York Times bestseller list. When she is not busily working on her next book, Suzanne likes to contemplate interesting phenomena, like how the three guppies in her aquarium became 161 guppies in five months.
Alexandra Hawkins is an unrepentant Anglophile who discovered romance novels as a teenager and knew that one day she would be writing her own. With her Lords of Vice series, she has combined her love of English history, mythology, and romance to create sensual character-driven stories that, she hopes, will touch readers' hearts. Alexandra lives in Georgia with her husband and three children.
Elizabeth Essex is the award-winning author of the critically acclaimed Reckless Brides historical series. When not re-reading Jane Austen, sipping tea or mucking about her garden, Elizabeth can be found writing, making up wonderful stories about people who live far more interesting lives than she. It wasn't always so. Elizabeth graduated from Hollins College with a BA in Classical Studies and Art History, and then earned her MA from Texas A&M University in Nautical Archaeology, also known as the archaeology of shipwrecks.

Valerie Bowman grew up in Illinois with six sisters (she's number seven) and a huge supply of historical romance novels. After a cold and snowy stint earning a degree in English with a minor in history at Smith College, she moved to Florida the first chance she got. Valerie now lives in Jacksonville with her family including her rascally dog, Roo. When she's not writing, she keeps busy reading, traveling, or vacillating between watching crazy reality TV and PBS. Valerie loves to hear from readers.

Once Upon a Christmas Scandal by Alexandra Hawkins

This is a great short story that continues the Lords of Vice Series. Lord Vanewright from "Sunrise With A Notorious Lord" has a younger sister, Ellen who just wants to stay home and take care of her father who is dying. She finds out that her parents have tripeled her dowry and are having a house party for christmas and inviting eligible bachelors. One of the guests is Derrick Hunt, Earl of Swainsbury. He has a secret agenda for being at the house party. His sister was killed by a fortune hunter and he has been trying to find him ever since. He knows if the killer hears about Ellen's dowry she is in danger. She thinks he is a fortune hunter like the rest. This is a stand alone story, but I would urge you to read the whole Lords of Vice series. You will not be disappointed. Alexandra is an amazing historical romance author.

The Scandal Before Christmas by Elizabeth Essex

This is my first Elizabeth Essex book and I will definetely being reading more of her.

Take one shy spinster and a bold navy officer and trap them together at a country house party in a snowstorm and the fun begins. When they first meet Ian sees Ann as a plain, awkward, shy mouse who doesn't speak. Ann sees a ton gentleman who is handsome, charming and very confident. She agreed to marry him to escape her overbearing mother and he is marrying her to spite his aristocratic father. Can Ian bring her out of her shell? Will Ann open up to Ian and let him see the real person behind the dowdy spinster? This is a very sensual and lovely romance story that I enjoyed very much.

It Happened Under The Mistletoe by Valerie Bowman

Imagine yourself at a house party at christmas time with young and old gentlemen looking for an heiress and young women trying to snare a title. Oliver Townsende the new Duke of Markham is ruthlessly being pursued by a young lady and her mother and Cerian Blake is trying to avoid being trapped into marriage to any man. They both decide to hide in the same silver closet to outwit their pursuers. Oliver comes up with a plan to thwart their pursurers, pretend that he and Cerian are courting and when the house party ends they go their seperate ways. The only problem is that they are attracted to each other their scheme goes awry. This story has great twists and turns and will captivate you from beginning to end. Oh yeah, there is also a mysterious matchmaking feline. Great Story.

This is a fun, romantic and fast paced short story that I very much enjoyed. It's the second book that I've read of Suzanne Enoch's the first being book one of the series "The Devil Wares Kilts" a 5* read that I highly recommend.
The title is very true and Duncan is really one hot scot. He and Julia had great chemistry and even though their relationship move incredible fast it was also believable with how they felt for each other even with just meeting. I can not wait to read the next book.

I enjoyed the short story but felt very lost in the beginning. This is the end I think of a series and to truly enjoy you need to read the series. That way you have a understanding and knowledge of the secondary characters. Ellen and Derrick had a very fast and quick relationship over the Christmas Holliday to quick for me but still enjoyable. I may just go back and start at the beginning of the series.

2.75/3*
I'm really not sure if I enjoyed this story or not. I finished it and if I've done that I usually give it a 3* rating because it kept my attention enough to finish it. But I did not enjoy the way it was written. The language/wording was a bit hard to understand for me, at times I had to reread the sentence. There were times in the story that I felt the chemistry between Ian and Anne but then it would be gone.

This is the first story I've read by Valerie Bowman and it will not be my last. I laughed and cried throughout the book and I loved the hero and heroine along with the secondary characters. Oliver and Cerian had great chemistry and it was a pleasure to read how they found their HEA.

Great Holiday Anthology
By Farrah
A lovely little collection of holiday novellas, Christmas Brides was a sweet and enjoyable read. All four of the novellas were great and I liked each one.

All the novellas in this book have been previously published, so I'd already read (and loved) 3 of them. Once Upon a Christmas Scandal was the only one that I hadn't read and I really liked it as well. With its engaging character, hint of a murder mystery, and delightful romance, it was definitely an enjoyable read, just like the others. This book is definitely a perfect read for getting into the holiday mood. Each book added its own take on the holidays and I liked them all.

Christmas Brides was a wonderful holiday romance anthology that I really liked. All of the novellas were great and I enjoyed them all. Romance lovers, if you want something to get you into the holiday mood, then this is a book you won't want to miss.
