This book is so short - with (18 pt?) font - that you might be tempted to pass it over. DON'T!!! They don't teach these ideas in Business School! Buy it, read it carefully, then buy copies for your managers and HR staff - I plan to present my key (Supportive and Engaged) people with their own copies in my "Conversations" with them this week.

I was recently given a copy of this book, and it is phenomenal. Like the other feedback, I too thought, "its really short with a fairly large font"...is this for real? But the nuggets of truth are real and can be acted on immediately. As the manager for a large coffee house, I will be using this with my staff and will be passing it up the chain to our district and regional managers. Definitely a gem!!

About the Author
James R. Woodworth has been a member of the Department of Political Science at Miami University (Ohio) since 1948. He received a Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University and had a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Minnesota. He has served in several administrative positions at Miami University, including the chair of the Department of Political Science, and associate dean of the College of Arts and Science. Dr. Woodworth has been a member of the Oxford City Council, chaired the Oxford Charter Commission and served as a trustee for a local hospital and as a consultant to the Fairfield (Ohio) Charter Commission. His publications include ATLANTIS: ROLE-PLAYING SIMULATIONS FOR THE STUDY OF AMERICAN POLITICS (with Robert Gump), PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE, plus articles.

W. Robert Gump has been a member of the Department of Political Science at Miami University (Ohio) since 1962. He received a Ph.D. in political science from The Ohio State University and a J.D. from the University of Michigan. He was admitted to practice at the Ohio Bar in 1952. Dr. Gump has served as chairman of the Oxford City Planning Commission, as a trustee for a local hospital, and as a consultant to the Charles F. Kettering foundation, the City of Dayton Charter Reciew Committee, the City of Middletown Charter Review Committee, and the City of Hamilton Charter Review Committee. His publications include ATLANTIS: ROLE-PLAYING SIMULATIONS FOR THE SUTYD OF AMERICAN POLITICS (with James R. Woodworth), plus articles.

James R. Forrester has been a faculty member of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at West Libery State College (West Virginia) since 1969. He received his Ph.D. in political science from West Virginia University in 1979. He is a member of the Bethany (West Virginia) Town Council and has been a presidential election consultant for WTOV � Channel 0, Steubenville/Wheeling. His publications include GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS IN WEST VIRGINIA: READINGS, CASES AND COMMENTARIES, 5th edition, plus articles.

Mixed Feelings

I have mixed feelings about The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived; well, not the man...but the book about the man. First, a little about the book; written by Steven K. Scott, the best-selling author of The Richest Man Who Ever Lived and The Greatest Words Ever Spoken, it's about Jesus and how his life on earth can be a model for ours to help us in overcoming adversity and/or limitations that challenge our ability to "live our lives with unparalleled success and unshakable happiness."

Ok, so the book is well-written. It is also put together very well, following a very logical progression of alliterated points. There is no question in my mind that the points are practical, balanced, and beneficial for achieving the results promised by the author. I also believe that Jesus is the ultimate model for living life on this earth. Where are my mixed feelings?

As I have said, I agree with the principles and teaching exposited in the book, The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived...I believe them and I try to model and live my life by them. I especially liked the "Whole Different Kind of Love" chapter. I also like very much that almost all the chapters ended with a list of action steps to help the reader with concrete starting points for making change in their life. What I did not care for, and I don't mean this to be a criticism of the book (I really hope I have qualified myself enough by now), is the packaging. I'm left with a taste that the message of Christ's gospel is being hawked as a self-help clinic; "How to be like Jesus in 6 easy steps!" I don't want to imply that is the intent of the author, Scott, I'm just saying that's the aftertaste I'm left with. I think the gospel is about much more than "earthly success" and "unshakeable happiness." I think there is something to eternal joy in the face of and in spite of unspeakable grief and tragedy. I think there are millions of people that might put these principles into action and not achieve the tangible results of earthly success...success is not always measured by what we see in our immediate reality or future.

Bottom Line: It is a good book with solid principles and it is technically accurate. My personal opinion is that the book presents a commercialized message and borders on a "what's in it for me" sales pitch. I'm left feeling a little disappointed.

Living above the Mundane.

I'm going to be 50...someday - to emulate Meg Ryan.

And Steven Scott tells me that on that day, I will have lived 2600 of my (on average) 3,952 weeks. Does that bother you? It bothers me... and I am actually closer to 40 than 50 (wrinkles not withstanding).

Do you want to know that the world is different because you were here?

Steven Scott is an ordinary guy who has succeeded in extraordinary ways because he has used the principles that he learned by following Jesus. With a fair amount of learning from Solomon and Thomas Edison thrown in.

He started his career with eight failures and became a multi-millionaire. In this book, he shows you how to succeed at being the best YOU you can be, by being like Jesus. This book is "How to win friends and influence people" plus every book that John Maxwell ever wrote, all in one. You can save yourself a ton of time and money if you buy, read, highlight, study, and apply the principles of this book.

Rarely do I find a book that I am convinced every one of my kids needs to read. Right now I'm plotting how to get this book in formats that they will all assimilate. (This one's an audio learner (audio book), this one's a visual learner (regular book), what if I read it aloud at bedtime for this one...)

I believe we are all called to greatness. You are called to greatness. God put you on earth for a purpose. You can fulfill it. This book is a great tool.

About the man Jesus was

The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived teaches us the principles of fulfillment from the life of Jesus. I think it's interesting, for a Christian, to contemplate the man Jesus as opposed to the diety of Jesus. Christians believe that Jesus had a dual nature as both man and God, but this book really investigates how the man acted in order to carry out his divine mission.

From the first chapter, which provides the arguments for why you should base your life on the principles by which Jesus lived his, to the last chapter, which warns against living your life only for the possessions and fame you can garner, this book provides the most useful reference to the principles of life, which Jesus lived and taught, that I have found.

My favorite chapters were "The Sense of Mission", "A Message that Communicates", and "Your Incredible Worth." Here's my favorite quote from the book:

"Think how much better our world would be today if we valued ourselves and those we work with, meet, and interact with in the manner of Jesus"

This statement is made after referencing Matthew 6:26-27 and Matthew 10:29-31 where Jesus reminds his disciples that God takes care of all living things and he cares even more for them. Have you thought of that today? God is caring for every living animal and plany on the planet, but he cares more for that person you're having an argument with than he does the animals and plants. It will make us stop and interact differently if we think like this.

Great book. Much of the content acted as a reminder of past readings, but there were equally as many new and insightful thoughts.

A great follow-up book!!

Alex's new life continues right where it was left off in the previous book, A Growing Lad. From the start, Alex takes us into what his life has been like since he moved to the farm to work for the summer. He tells us what he has been doing, the new friends he has made and how his life has changed. His voice is one of a matured young man who has had to grow up fast but who is happy with where he is at the moment, both physically and mentally.

From a shy, socially awkward teenager, Alex has grown to be a matured young man who has made strides in his social interactions and who has learned a great deal about himself and others through the process. He continues his new-found relationship with Ryan and he continues to form friendship bonds with Farley and Bob.

With Alex's introspective narration and a set of interesting events that complemented the plot, the writing was as great as I expected. I was absorbed in the story and its characters, especially the developing relationship between Alex and Ryan - they were adorable. I enjoyed how U.M. Lassiter brought these two together. Their interactions were entertaining and their relationship an enjoyable addition to the story. It was great to see how far Alex had gotten. He was more confident with how he carried himself and continued to accept his situation even if at times he felt flustered with the attention he attracted and what was expected of him because of his size.

The author managed to give us a great storyline while at the same time giving us a glimpse into the new life Alex is embarking. I enjoyed the way he went about dealing with Alex's doubts towards Bob's intentions, Alex's interactions with the others characters and the resolution of the plot. As I kept reading I had my doubts about how U.M. Lassiter would bring it all together in the end, but he manage to do it in a way that felt real and not over the top, which I appreciated.

All in all, Small Farm Big Farm Boy is a great addition to the Growing Pains series. I would like to read more about Alex's story. I am curious to read more about his continued growth as a person and the new life and relationships he has established.

I received this book as an ARC through NetGalley. My thanks to the publisher, author, and Net Galley for letting me read this.

The plot was more than a bit absurd, but could have worked on a smaller scale. I think having him end up being 7ft tall and 600 pounds was just too much. Alex seemed like a good kid, more than a bit naive, but basically a good, if simple, person. I wish I could say something about Ryan, but I got no feeling for his character what so ever. I wouldn't have known they were dating if Alex hadn't said so, and they hadn't fooled around a bit. I have no idea why they were together, or what kept the relationship going. The plot made me want to bang their heads together. Ok, I can see Alex might not have understood what was going on, but that Ryan just went along with everything made me think that he was an idiot. The writing style felt a bit clunky, and didn't help the plot or characters.

From reading the description
"Just because you're large, doesn't mean you want to be in charge." and seeing the cover and the fact extasy books published it, I started it thinking it would be erotica, or at least slightly but it wasn't.

The characters were OK but the plot wasn't really for me. I didn't connect with the characters and it didn't flow very well as well as it could have

This is a nice little book

This is a nice little book. The author does a good job at introducing JSON and how it fits in with other technologies as a data interchange format. She makes novel analogies to help the reader understand the "why JSON" question and what JSON is meant to do vs. not meant to do.

I would have liked to hear a little more about the author's opinions on past, present, future of JSON. The author is laser-focused on the lesson plan and there are no opportunities here to glean "insider" production experience.

Overall, this book is better than reading a technical specification or trying to piece together disparate blog articles/tutorials online.

Very clear and fast to read JSON book, especially for beginners

Even if you know nothing about programming you will understand this book. It is extremely clear. It is an excellent book to begin learning JSON, JSON Schema, and beginning JSON security vulnerabilities and what to do about them. It was written in 2015 and therefore is more up-to-date than other books. It touches on other related technologies like AngularJS, Node, etc. JSON doesn't care about what language you write in - PHP, ASP.NET, HTML, etc.

This book gives plain English examples, then progresses to simple JSON coding. It does not give a lot of extra examples to work through, but does show what to watch out for, and references to other resources. You can read this book in a day or two, perhaps in a few hours. It's only 112 pages including the index.

If you want to know if what you are crafting is good JSON data, but don't need to understand the in-depth programming of JSON, then this is an especially good book.

If you are a total beginner to programming, or don't know a lot of programming lingo, then this is a great book.

If you already know some JSON, this book is NOT for you, go buy a different book.

100 years strong

I have several editions of this history book. Although no deep, dark rituals are revealed, it is useful how A Phi A, from its humble beginnings became the fraternal institution it is today.

Also, to supplement your reading, read Herman 'Skip' Mason's The Founding of Alpha.

Grade 3 Up. A lonely, elderly woman visits the park each day, where she notices a lonely boy, who sits on the bench by her. He is silent, watching the other children play. The unhappy youngster reminds her of her own childhood when she was comforted by a special closeness with her grandfather. She especially enjoyed her grandfather's stories, including one regarding a stone she'd found. Her grandfather calls it a worry stone, and spins a tale around it involving the Chumash people. When her grandfather dies, the child remembers it and is comforted. Now an old woman, she shares the stone and its stories with the boy on the bench. This sincere effort has a heavy touch. The telling is marred by an excess of sentiment and cliches (e.g., a "hacienda on the edge of time"). Gerig's watercolor illustrations are pretty, but overly romanticized, awash in lovely if unlikely color. Dengler's tale itself is profound and moving, if less than convincing. Gr. 3^-5. An original folktale in the spirit of the peaceful Chumash tribe of California centers this masterful picture book for older children. Spinning off from that tale are two other generation-linking stories. Amanda, an old woman, enjoys watching children play in the park but is troubled by a sad-faced child who silently shares her bench. Finally the boy tells her that the other children say he is too little to play with them. The boy's hurt reminds Amanda of her own childhood, and thus begins the second story. No one in her large family on the hacienda had time to play with her, no one except Grandfather. The highlight of their days together was the stories Grandfather shared. One was inspired by a shiny, smooth stone Amanda picked up on their morning walk. Calling her find a worry stone, Grandfather told her the story of the Indian bride Tokatu's tears for her dead husband--tears that became stones and, when rubbed slowly and thoughtfully, the stones seemed to ease the holder's troubles. Amanda didn't put much stock in her stone's powers until Grandfather died. Then she found that rubbing it brought back fond memories of Grandfather and soothed her pain. Amanda gives that same worry stone to the boy. Such a gift requires an explanatory story, which, in turn, leads to friendship between the old woman and the child, bringing full circle the power of storytelling to bridge and bond the generations. The poignant, heartwarming story is lyrically written and is illustrated with equal eloquence. Three stories nest together but never mesh in this sentimental picture-book debut. An old woman--in a floppy hat with a red feather--sits in the park daily, and a small boy, ignored by his peers, sits with her in silence. She recalls the loneliness of her own childhood, assuaged by her grandfather, a storyteller. When she brought him an unusual stone she had found, Grandfather told her the Chumash legend of the worry stone: If it is rubbed gently, ``the worry goes away.'' The old woman gives her stone to the boy, with a story and a promise of more stories to come. Dengler notes she invented the Chumash legend at the center of the story; it's one in a series of contrivances that the gentle tone fails to disguise. I thought this book was outstanding and it will bring color into any child's life. This book would be a high-quality book for any parent or older sibling to read to a younger child because of the wonderful pictures and inspiring story within its cover. Also, it is a story that you can make happen in your own yard.

This story is about an elderly lady named Amanda who as a child had a wonderful, caring grandfather. They would spend all their time together, telling stories and she was very fond of him. One day she discovers a stone her grandfather says is a worry stone and by rubbing it in your hand all your worries go away. Now, several years later, her grandfather has passed away. She goes for walks in the park all by herself and is awfully lonely. One day, a little boy comes and sits next to her. He too is lonely. No other kids would play with him and Amanda can't stand to see him sad. Then she gets an idea. The worry stone could help. Does it help, and do Jason and Amanda become friends, or will both of them be lonely and alone?

This book is very touching and will show kids that read this book compassion and understanding. I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars. You should defiantly read this book to a child who is about 3years old and up. See how touching it is for yourself.

One of our family's top five books

This story is a beautiful interweaving of three stories, a Native American woman who loses her husband in war, a girl's relationship with her grandfather, and an old woman who discovers how to reach a lonely child that she has seen in the park. It is a gentle and lovely way to introduce to children the concept of death and a chance to discuss the value of the people we love in our lives and to understand the feelings of others. The story is wonderful in itself, but the illustrations make it even more so. They seem to glow with an inner light.

The Charing Cross Mystery

When I had read all that Conan Doyle had written of Sherlock Holmes I was left with a void in my life. Until I found J.S. Fletcher. His clever plot lines developed in the atmosphere and culture of Victorian England were just what I was looking for. His descriptions of life and characters in rural and small town 19th Century England are heartwarming and accurate. For a few hours, they transport one back to an age that makes our overcomplicated, technologically driven society seem like some hideous future world from the mind of H.G. Wells.

Action packed mystery of 1923

I'm addicted to J. S. Fletcher mysteries, but I'm not as enthusiastic about this one as I have been about all the others I've read. I enjoyed it - but an enormous amount of criminal activity is packed into this novel - murder, blackmail, kidnapping, and theft - almost too much to swallow.

It starts with a hale and hearty-looking gentleman dropping dead without warning in a railway compartment. Murder - as it turns out! The young barrister who witnesses the sudden death gets caught up in the mystery and decides to investigate. It doesn't hurt that the murder victim has an attractive granddaughter willing to join the young man in his investigations.

In the course of the amateur and police investigations that ensue, murder begets more murder and other crimes. There is never a dull moment, with leads being followed up in all directions. The plot is so complicated, that the eventual unraveling of the mystery left me still somewhat confused about what happened. Even the investigators remain mildly confused.

But despite the excessive complexity of the plot, Fletcher's flair for creating quirky and compelling characters still makes for fun reading.

If you're reading all of Fletcher's available mysteries, as I am, might as well read this one. But if you're new to this Golden Age mystery writer, I'd suggest starting with one of his great ones, such as Ravensdene Court, The Middle of Things, The Chestermarke Instinct, The Herapath Property, or The Borough treasurer.

Classic, again

Written in old style, reminds me the time of the Yellow Books, in the '40. Some times is a little boring, because becomes slow. But deserves a reading.
