I am disappointed with this book

Honestly, I am disappointed with this book. The best way to describe it is unbalanced. Before purchasing it, I had good knowledge of Persian grammar, and from this point of view the book is really easy for me, with very few useful grammar drills to practice what I already knew. At the same time, the book is heavy on vocabulary, but the majority of new words are not in the glossary which also lacks phonetics. I basically spend hours in looking up words in the dictionary. Another downside to this book is the lack of text to give context to the vocabulary. I am giving three stars only because I consider this textbook useful for building on vocabulary, that is if I have patience to go past lesson two.

Mark Kishlansky

Mark Kishlansky is the Frank Baird, Jr. professor of history at Harvard University. He has a special interest in history of early modern Britain, focusing on the history of politics and political thought. He teaches courses on English social history, the Stuart Age, the English Revolution and the Reign of Charles I. He is a frequent participant in the sophomore tutorial program at Harvard and directs senior theses on British history. His publications include Civilization in the West (5th ed. 2002), A Monarchy Transformed, 1603-1714 (1998), Political Cultural and Cultural Politics in Early Modern England (1995), Society and Culture in World History (1994), Early Modern Europe: The Crises of Authority editor (1988), Parliamentary Selection: Social and Political Choice in Early Modern England (1986) and The Rise of the New Model Army (1979).

Excellent songbook. The first part has scores of three staves (clarinet and piano with treble and bass clefs), the second part has the same scores only for clarinet. The skill level required is begginer to intermediate. There are interesting scores such as "The flight of Bumble-Bee (Korsakov)", "Humoresque (Dvorak)" and others.

The clarinet solos that are the title of the book are provided as paper inserts that come with the bound book. The bound book itself (which is the majority of what you get and probably all you'll see if you find a used copy) is only piano accompaniment and not the clarinet solos you'd buy this for.

This makes little sense and is not at all clear from Amazon's listing or the book itself...

I just finished my first read-through of Intervention, and I've got to say that for the fitness professional, it might be the single most important book I've ever read. For those familiar with Dan John, it will come as no surprise that the information is logical, systematic, packed with common sense, and yet presented in a way that makes you say "I never thought of it that way." I found that it simultaneously challenges and validates much of what I've done over the past 25 years, but that I'm neglecting one of the fundamental human movements. As Dan notes, it's something I know I should be doing--and even program for other people--but find reasons not to do myself.

This one's a classic, for sure.

If you don't know who Dan John is, he's a legend in strength training.
I was curious if Coach Dan could possibly write a book as important as his previous work "Never Let Go," which is in a class by itself.

"Intervention" is an outstanding book by an authentic expert in the area of strengthening and conditioning. This book exceeded my expectations.
I knew it would be good, but wasn't sure how he could possibly top the work of Never Let Go.

"intervention" is a system. 10 questions, 5 principles that can completely change the way you train or work with clients.
If you're in the fitness industry, this is an absolute "MUST READ" to get rid the clutter and truly understand what is most important.
I was blown away by the content. A simplistic approach to focusing on what really matters.

Insightful, practical, and superbly written. Focus on the fundamentals. Dan does a wonderful job of explaining why this is critical in our training.
And, the 2 biggest objectives we all should focus on are clearly explained. This is breakthrough information, in my opinion.

Programs, philosophy, and no fluff, zero! An instant classic? Absolutely. I truly hope that this book gets into the hands of many and people implement intervention.

'Intervention'

One of the best reasons to buy Dan John's books is that he's a funny read as well as an insightful coach.

A natural raconteur, the author intersperses many of the chapters with anecdotes and snapshots of everyday life that lift the book above just being a bare matter of rep schemes, discussion of exercise selection etc. It was having enjoyed 'Never let go' on that basis that swayed me towards ordering 'Intervention'.

That's not to say that this wouldn't be an invaluable resource even if it was reduced to bare bones. The author does, in fact, repeatedly distill down his message and points out, in fact, that a lot of the time he feels he is telling athletes perfectly obvious or even common sense things: 'Fundamental human movements are fundamental', 'eat like an adult'...

One of the key points I took away from 'Intervention' is the value in accurately determining what your training needs are relative to the pressures and time-constraints of other aspects of life. A full-time job, some niggling injuries and an additional factor like a new baby or impending marriage (for example) doesn't go hand-in-hand with implementing a programme that was designed to get someone ready for a special forces pre-selection course, or football combine tests... And yet, that is what many of us have in our head when considering what is a 'reasonable' programme to attempt. Dan John champions an alternative approach favouring what is reasonable and sustainable verus tough but (sadly) unsustainable. Throughout he champions the use of fundamental human movement patterns as a basis for programme construction, with discussion of concepts around ensuring these movements are being performed optimally according to the trainee's needs, from novices through to advanced athletes.

Returning to an earlier reference, the author's diet chapter mentions 'eat like an adult'. Another bit of uncommon common sense, the more I thought about this the more I agree with the insight that a remarkable number of people today are basically still eating as if they were children (and fairly badly-fed children at that). Relying on ready-made processed or take-away meals to shore up a lack of cooking knowledge ... Eating sugary breakfast cereals and junk foodstuffs etc. I think that the concept of 'eating like an adult' encompasses the opposite approach: Shopping wisely, preparing skillfully (hopefully) and, in the process, likely ending up eating a substantially healthier diet as a result.

Not everyone needs to read a book like 'Intervention', but in my view if you are jaded with your training / carrying injuries / unsure of where you are going in your training then it may be tremendously useful.

Finally a satisfying mpreg.

The whole series has been good. The world building is good as is the pacing and development of the plot. The pregnancy was science based and plausible. No magic delivery or quick ending before the birth. The H is a likeable person who realizes his shortcomings and works to correct them. The h is a sweetheart who is slowly growing into a brave, capable human being. A status he'd long been denied. This is the 3rd in the series. So read them all. Should hopefully be one more.

I really love and enjoy reading these books in this series

I really loved reading this book and this wonderful series so far. I can't wait for the next book to come out. I love the relationship between Edward and Percy I also love the relationship between Mason and Reynard. I have love those characters in this series. I love the twists and turns and edge of the seat action in this series. I will recommend this book to everybody I know and to all my friends too. These books in this series are all wonderfully written.

Great story, anxious for book 4

Spoilers A lot happened in this installment. With Reynald, Edward and a very pregnant Percy on the run, they need to find a safe place. Mason is on the run after being tortured by his corrupt father and King. The foursome team up and expose the King for the monster he is. When Percy goes into labor, an attempt on their lives puts all of them in grave danger. Edward realizes that Mason's plan for him to dethrone their father is the only way they will all be safe.

Special tests like apo lipoprotein and hs-Crp can be really helpful and ...

This book is a breath of fresh air especially coming from a cardiologist. Too many people in healthcare today ignore natural, diet, exercise techniques as unproven or "alternative". This couldn't be farther from the truth!

In fact, Dr. Kahn goes over research that supports his diet and lifestyle advice for heart disease prevention.

One of the things I found most helpful reading this was the section on advanced cardiac markers (blood testing) that is not usually included in routine physicals. I know myself that more and more research is supporting the fact that routine physicals and bloodwork are just not enough to detect heart disease. Special tests like apo lipoprotein and hs-Crp can be really helpful and he explains why and how to get these tests.

I also thought the section describing the benefits of sauna treatments was fascinating. That was one of a few new, unique recommendations he has.

Lastly, Unlike many medical books- this one is an easy read with quick actionable advice.

The world should support people like Dr. Kahn who supports the shift towards wellness rather than "illness" medicine.

Dr. Kahn is doing wonderful work spreading the message of preventing cardiovascular disease. We have been searching for the magic pill or procedure for our number one killer in this country but the real cure is to address the root causes through lifestyle with healthy eating habits, exercising, sleep, avoiding smoking and managing stress. He even talks about the benefits of saunas for heart health, so he covers it all!

This book reaches us through the studies that supports the importance of lifestyle but more importantly through the touching stories of patients and their families. Heart disease is often preventable and I am on board with him to help prevent 1,000,000 heart attacks as he proposes. His advice is practical and we need to awaken to the active role that each of us plays in our own healthcare.

Excellent read. Dr. Kahn finds a good balance between strong science and approachability for the reader. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was concise and informative, exactly the appropriate length to make the argument for the next generation of care. This book is actually Dr. Campbell Titchener's Feature Writing class lecture notes transcribed, and it is quite good. It's also useful for working newspaper folks to use as a reference book, to remind themselves, for instance, to include all the necessary components for a review of specific sorts of artistic endeavors.
Dr. Titchener read aloud much student work in the class I took, and he pulled no punches in evaluating the results. There was one unfortunate woman who could not capably put one word in front of another, yet she bubbled constantly about what a great writer she intended to be, all the books and plays and articles she was going to author. Dr. Titchener one day pronounced her work "trite" (he was absolutely correct), and it was extremely amusing to see the woman's cluelessly dismissive reaction, her declaration that he was "an idiot."
About three-fourths of the way into the semester, Dr. Titchener had an uncommon experience in his own life, and he wrote a short feature about it, which he read to the class. The response was brutal; students viciously ripped the piece up one page and down the other, and poor Dr. Titchener just sat there absorbing it all... sorta like body blows in a boxing match. He was the only college professor I ever encountered who had the guts to expose himself to an open-forum critique from his students, and you've really got to admire someone who has the fortitude to do that.

Good textbook for a Great Class

I took a class called "Reviewing the Arts" and this was our textbook, heavily supplemented by actual reviews from major newspapers. The book covers art, theater, music and the like. It's very readable and I only noticed one error in the name of the Martha Graham dance company, and apparently it's an error that has been there through several editions.

Overall, this would be a good read for a student or someone who is interested in writing reviews as a freelancer or for a hobby.

Dating from the early 13th century, the Vulgate Cycle relates the entire course of Arthurian legend, from the early history of the Grail to Arthur's death. The five component romances, written by an anonymous author or group of authors, are the Estoire del Saint Graal, the Estoire de Merlin, the huge Lancelot propre, the Queste del Saint Graal, and the tragic conclusion, the Mort Artu.

The Post-Vulgate Cycle, also written anonymously, is a modified version of the Vulgate material reconstructed by scholars from surviving fragments translated into Spanish and Portuguese. Instead of focusing on the illicit love of Lancelot and Guenevere, the Post-Vulgate author sets Arthur and the Grail at center stage.

The Whole Story (Abridged)

As a child, I grew to love Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur. But I also fond it frustrating. Why was the end of the story of Tristan and Palamedes missing? Why did the Roman War not seem to have existed after that book? What was the questing beast? Why were there two differing accounts of how the Fisher King was maimed?

I read comments, but the commentators seemed, to me, to be amazingly uninterested in such questions. They would explain that Malory alone had first made one book out of the many Arthurian books, but I sometimes wondered if they had even read this one book.

Of course, eventually I discovered the old French romances in the University Library, and taught myself to read Old French to some degree. And, I discovered why Malory was so good, but also discovered all the missing parts which Malory didn't put into his tale. I found out who Galahaut the High Prince was, discovered the story of Guinglain son of Gawain, and read the account in the Prose Tristan about Tristan and the Land of Servage, which was so much superior to Malory's poor efforts.

Best of all, was Oskar Sommer's Vulgate Arthurian Cycle, in 8 enormous bound volumes as thick as phone books, providing secret lore concerning Lancelot and his kin.

Then in 1196 the final volume of Norris J. Lacy's Lancelot-Graal appeared, the conclusion of a translation into modern English of seven of Sommer's eight volumes, plus a translation of the remnant of the Post-Vulgate, a modified cycle which now existed only in fragments, but which told such major Athurian events as the death of King Lot, the death of the Queen of Orkney, and the death of King Pellinore, the Christening of Sir Palamedes, and the final end of the Questing Beast.

Unfortunately this immense series of books was out of print for years, not because of demand, which if anything has increased, but because of unaccountable lack of interest by the publisher in either putting out another printing of the books themselves or assigning rights to an eager paperback company.

However, a selection of material from the Lacy Lancelot-Grail volumes is still in print, in The Lancelot-Grail reader. The selections are knitted together by short summaries of the missing parts, and there is more missed than presented.

That creates a delightful tension. One knows one is missing material. Most of the material dropped makes sense, though I do wish Lacy had kept the account of Mordred for the first time learning who is true father is. But this is very much a "good parts" book, as William Goldman described his Princess Bride. If you want to get the gist of most of the full Lancelot version of the Arthurian legend, and read the best of it, then this is the book.

The book ends with an appendix of some Post-Vulgate material, exactly that material which in my opinion is most important in the Post-Vulgate.
