About the Author

Ross W. Greene, Ph.D., is the originator of the Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) model described in this book, an approach he has researched extensively, along with colleagues throughout the world. Helped our household; Helped me.

Our child isn't "explosive" but just way harder to get to do stuff than some - i.e. transition from bed to up, from TV to homework, from friend's house to car, etc. This book really helps in explaining those behaviors so they make sense and giving techniques to avoid the threats and yelling that I hate to say was getting pretty common in our house. Maybe better title: "The Explosive Parent; A New Approach for Understanding and Dealing With the Strange Person You Become sometimes when Dealing With Your Child."

this book helped me make sense of my own childhood.

This was an excellent read. I'm 30 years old, and I was not reading this for my own parenting skills (although that was a definite perk), but to gain some insight as to why my own childhood was incredibly hurtful, frustrating, and confusing. Coming from a home with no abuse or out and out mistreatment, it is hard even at this point to look back and make sense of why growing up was so difficult. I had problems in school, although I tried very hard, and I was constantly getting in trouble for not following through on things, even though I didn't realize what I hadn't followed through on. I had problems getting along with peers and siblings, and spent a lot of time wondering why I was so stupid and lonely. I had plan A parents, and this book was really helpful in making sense of it all. I'm pretty sure this book isn't supposed to make you cry, but I did. I can vouch for kids like me, that they aren't failing because they want to be defiant and rebellious. Kids like me experience pain in constantly trying to succeed and failing, feeling burned out, and acting out of intense frustration. Discipline won't help that, because the child already knows and is trying. Helping your kid develop skills to overcome those challenges is what they need. Excellent book... 5 stars.

Great resource for truly coping with explosiveness

I read The Explosive Child after reading The Defiant Child (and attending a Douglas Riley-esque parenting class). The problem with the premise in The Defiant Child, and in most of the negative reviews on this book, is that there are many adults who cling obstinately to the belief that these children are capable of doing better than they are, and if the adult can just make said child's life difficult enough, he/she will shape up.

The problem with that line of thinking, and the subsequent "strategies" it produces, is that no matter how much I punish a child, if he/she is incapable of doing better, the issues we face will persist. It is akin to punishing a child who needs glasses for not being able to see. A much better solution all around would be to get him/her glasses.

My daughter, in the Riley worldview, would be "punishing me" or "controlling" and "manipulating." What I saw was a little girl who was so very overwhelmed by various aspects of her environment, that she had no adaptations, no ability to cope. I can't imagine what it must be like to live in a world where the way your plate is turned at dinner, or which direction your socks are facing, is so overwhelming a proposition that you lose the ability to function and/or think rationally. That's the little girl I was living with. The little girl who could blow up over the most incomprehensible thing, and for whom most of life's daily situations and frustrations were just more than she could bear.

In the calm between storms, she was (and still is) a delightful girl - funny, bright, loving, and always, always remorseful after an explosion. I knew she knew what she was doing was wrong, and moreover, she didn't want to be doing it at all. A common conversation, post-blow up, involved my baby girl, red-faced, tear soaked and shaking, saying, "Mommy, do you still love me? Even when I lose all my marbles?" What amount of punishment was going to solve that? She KNEW what she was doing was wrong, the problem was that she had no other strategies for dealing with her overwhelming frustrations.

My goal in seeking treatment for her at all in the first place was not about how I could make a phone call or waste time on the computer without her "bothering" me (actual parenting class verbiage there), but how I could soothe my daughter. If I never talked on the phone without interruption again, it would be a small price to pay to help soothe my girl - to help her cope with the stuff of life.

That's what I feel like I have gotten in this book - a set of strategies to employ, as part of a complete parenting philosophy. More importantly, it accomplishes these goals without the guiding philosophy of "I'm bigger than you, and I can inflict several different types of pain to get you to comply."

That's the best way I can describe this book: it is like getting glasses, and finally being able to see the world.

Excellent introduction to Paul's interaction with contemporary literature in the Second Temple Era

In a word, this book is brilliant. The writing is cogent and engaging, the content is relevant and useful, the organization and flow of the essays is seamless, and the overall result is an accessible, valuable contribution to the ongoing conversation about how we can more fully appreciate Paul's writings under the illumination of his religion and culture.

Although the book is a collection of 20 relatively short (seven or eight page) essays written by separate authors, it doesn't read that way. There is remarkable consistency in the organization, rhetorical approach, logical flow, and even the illustrations among the various chapters. Each essay addresses a small section of Romans, in canonical sequence; comparing and contrasting that section with a religious or historical text from the Second Temple era that contains similar themes and ideas, and ultimately helps us understand better how Paul incorporated those familiar elements in his premises, arguments, and conclusions.

The pattern of each essay is regular. First, the author(s) states the basic theme of the section and describes how it fits into the surrounding context. Next, the extra-biblical text is introduced and analyzed for relevance, and then compared and contrasted with Paul's writing to see how he used familiar vocabulary and cultural context as connection points for his argumentation. In each case there is considerable overlap, but Paul eventually makes a rhetorical turn to demonstrate or highlight how the Christ event changed, or even reversed, our understanding of God's work and objectives in history and eschatology.

In addition to providing deeper insight into Paul's writing in its cultural context, the book serves another valuable purpose. It provides a broad, nontechnical introduction to the important and ongoing dialog about the relationship between Paul and Second Temple Judaism. Delving into this topic by engaging directly with the writings of Wright and Sanders starts the initiate down a long and daunting path that stretches back to Schweitzer, Luther, Augustine, and even Plato, with numerous rabbit chases along the way. The opening introductory chapter and successive collection of essays in this book shortcut that path significantly, and it serves as an effective launching pad for this journey. Additional resources listed at the end of each chapter provide even further help in that regard. There is also a comprehensive glossary of potentially unfamiliar terms that are common to this subject at the back of the book, and when those words occur in the running text they are highlighted in bold font.
A corollary benefit of this approach to putting Paul in context is the interaction with a wide range of important apocryphal, apocalyptic, and historic texts that are not commonly read or studied by nonspecialists. During the course of the book, the reader encounters books that include the Wisdom of Solomon, Tobit, Jubilees, Sirach, The Epistle of Enoch, the Greek Life of Adam and Eve, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the writings of Philo and Josephus.

The contributors to this work are an emerging group of Pauline scholars from Durham University and it is exciting to see them standing on the shoulders of their masters, helping us peer further into the mind of Paul. This book is definitely not some esoteric rehashing of previous material. It is obvious that they have not only learned well, but they are challenging their teachers and starting to surpass them. We can look forward to some fresh advances from them in this field.

In summary, this book provides a framework for deeper understanding of the book of Romans at multiple levels of discourse by introducing readers to, and then examining, Paul's use of cultural semaphores that would connect implicitly with his audience. And further, it does it in a way that is interesting, informative, balanced, and readily understandable even to those who are new to the subject. Beyond its value for personal study, I think it would also make an excellent study guide for the book of Romans in a group setting.

Interesting look at what other Jews where teaching in contrast to Paul's teachings in Romans

"Reading Romans in Context" is an essay collection that looked at various themes found in Romans and in Second Temple Jewish literature. Paul sometimes counters an argument that he apparently believes will be brought against his teachings, but it's not always clear what that argument is. By looking at Second Temple Jewish literature (like the Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, Dead Sea Scrolls, and the writings of Philo or Josephus), we can discover what other Jews around that time were teaching. The authors compare these to Romans to find similarities and where the teachings diverge.

The authors had a good understanding of Paul's teachings and used the comparison to add insights and nuances to our understanding of Romans (not to reinterpret them). I found the essays interesting, especially the one on distinctive food habits. I didn't have any trouble following their arguments. There was a glossary in the back, but the terms were defined well enough in the text that I never needed to use it. I'd recommend this book to those interested in this topic.

Phrases and themes that were studied were: "son of God," God's wrath and divine justice, circumcision and covenant identity, "works of the law," "righteousness of God," the faith of Abraham, suffering of the righteous, death through Adam, slavery to sin or to righteousness, the Law's role, evil desires, human glorification linked to death, why God blesses or curses a person, righteousness by law vs. by faith and one's ability to keep the Law, Gentile inclusion, right living--self mastery vs. divine enabling, how one should interact with the government, distinctive food habits, God's role in our giving to the poor, and women in church ministry and leadership.

This book is a sane, careful analysis of Paul's relationship to the Jewish literature of his day filtered the themes of the book of Romans in a series of brilliant essays. All of the important Second Temple literature is judiciously discussed. Although some of the history in the introduction is weak (which isn't a huge point because numerous books treat the subject quite thoroughly) the further bibliographical resources are extremely strong, just about all that could be desired. The real meat of the book is the essays, which follow the outline of Romans. Each essay sets a Jewish text and its themes in comparison and contrast with Paul. Paul virtually always brings a significant change to the table. The danger is the essays being too long and boringly technical, or being too short and superficial. Further texts on the same topic are noted. The essays all strike the perfect balance to make an extremely useful book which is accessible both to the interested layman and the scholar, and the book succeeds marvelously at demonstrating exactly why this literature is so important for really understanding Paul.

Alan R. Velie is David Ross Boyd Professor in the English Department at the University of Oklahoma. He is the author of more than forty articles and three books and the editor of eight books, including the anthology American Indian Literature.

Fine anthology, w/ one serious reservation (no pun intended)

Velie has put together a fine anthology of all different genres of Native American literature. My one qualm is that in the first edition, published in '79 (I believe), a good many of the "poems" were represented by the work of Frances Densmore: transcribed into western musical notation, along with the original language lyrics, and with a glossary of the native words provided at the bottom of the page. In the revised edition, Densmore's transcriptions are replaced with simple translations presenting the poems as purely literary works. What's lost is the strong sense of these works as songs-- performances, communal play--and the necessity for the reader to get intimately involved in the work by using the glossary to translate the song for him or herself. The new edition's translations also give no clue about the nonsense syllables the singer often slips in between the syllables of a native word--a kind of Indian doo-wop or hey-nonny-nonny.

Not too many anthologies of American Indian literature exist, but considering that you're limited in options...this book is fantastic! It contains a mix of tribal mythologies, creation stories, and contemporary works by folks like N. Scott Momaday (1969 Pulitzer Prize winner for his book House Made of Dawn.) Highly recommend this book if you're into this stuff. Even if you're not, check it out anyway. Something new. :)

American Indian Literature An Anthology by Alan R. Velie (Author) was a good book, I wasn't familiar with the american indian folklore and literature, it was new concepts for me. I did very well in my class and test, some of the readings were dry, others were interesting. None the less it was a perspective into the native american life, which was interesting to learn about.

About the Author

Thomas J. Sergiovanni is Lillian Radford Professor of Education at Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas, where he teaches in the school leadership program and in the five-year teacher education program. Prior to joining the faculty at Trinity, he was on the faculty of education administration at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, for 19 years, and he chaired the department for 7 years. A former associate editor of Educational Administration Quarterly, he serves on the editorial boards of “Journal of Personnel Evaluation in Education and Catholic Education: A Journal of Inquiry and Practice”. Among his recent books are Moral Leadership (1992), Building Community in Schools (1994), Leadership for the Schoolhouse (1996), The Lifeworld of Leadership: Creating Culture, Community, and Personal Meaning in Our Schools (2000), Strengthening the Heartbeat: Leading and Learning Together in Schools (2005), Supervision: A Redefinition (2007), and Rethinking Leadership (2007).

Reginald Leon Green is Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Memphis. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Memphis, he was on the faculty of educational administration at Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio. Earlier, Dr. Green served at the teacher, principal, deputy superintendent, and superintendent levels of elementary and secondary education. In 1977, Dr. Green was one of five educators chosen nationally to participate in the Rockefeller Foundation's Superintendency Preparation Program; and in 1996, he was selected as an Associate to the Institute for Educational Renewal, under the leadership of Dr. John Goodlad.�

Most recently, Dr. Green published the�4th edition of the book entitled, Practicing the Art of Leadership: A Problem-Based Approach to Implementing the ISLLC Standards and the first edition of The Four Dimensions of Principal Leadership: A Foundation for Leading 21st Century Schools.�He has also authored a book on inner-city education, as well as various articles concerning such topics as: educational restructuring, primary grade restructuring, gang violence, and other contemporary educational issues.� He has completed national inquiries into nurturing characteristics that exist in schools and standards and assessment measures being established as part of school renewal.� This work lead to the development of the Center for Urban School Leadership where Dr. Green administered programs for five (5) years to prepare principals for leading urban schools using a non-traditional approach. Currently, Dr. Green teaches courses in educational leadership with a focus on instructional leadership, school renewal,�and models for turning around low performing schools.

Great reference though some outdated concepts.

I purchased this as reference material. This is not the most recent comprehensive publication on carbonate sequence stratigraphy however most of the concepts translate to today. There is a great introduction that explains the history and evolution of the concepts of sequence stratigraphy. The publication does an excellent job covering a wide range of topis in chapters. Topics range from purely carbonate to mixed carbonate-siliciclastic systems, modern-to-ancient systems, shallow -to-deep water. It will answer more questions then it raises and is highly recommended.
