About the Author
CHRIS COCKS was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia in 1957 and served three years and 28 days as a combat NCO with 3 Commando, the Rhodesian Light Infantry (the RLI, an airborne/airmobile unit), from 1976 to 1979. He was then offered a farming job in the country’s Lowveld; however, the army refused to countenance a waiver of call-ups, so he attested into the British South Africa Police and spent the remaining 14 months of the bush war as a PATU (Police Anti-Terrorist Unit) stick leader and avoiding the Military Police. He moved to Johannesburg in 1996 and stumbled into a publishing career, specializing in southern African military history. He has written four books: the bestselling Fireforce: One Man’s War in the Rhodesian Light Infantry, its sequel Out of Action, a steamy novel Cyclone Blues, and co-wrote The Saints, the RLI’s history. He is the historian for The Rhodesian Light Infantry Regimental Association and edits its magazine, The Cheetah.

Fireforce ROCKS!!!

This is a great book, written by a guy who has more combat jumps than ANYONE in the US or UK military (well, that's unsubstanitated...but I'm pretty sure.) The book's about a conscript who signs on to become a regular in the Rhodesian Security Forces, Rhodesian Light Infantry. These guys jumped in combat several times a week. The American Paratroopers who had the most jumps in WW2 had maybe 5 combat jumps. The author had close to 40. I cannot say enought good things about this book. It's well written and easy to read. Very informative and full of good information. I'm reading these books to get insight on how to win against guerillas. The Rhodesians won militarily, but lost due to politics. It's the typical story of how the military does the right thing, fights well and wins, but is held back by gutless politicians. OK enough rant from me. The book is good. Lots of action, lots of detail. I'm not a professional reviewer (as if you couldn't tell), but this book was great! One of those that I didn't want to be over! The only better book I've read on the Rhodesian Bush War is At The Going Down Of The Sun, by Charlie Warren, another trooper that served with the author in the same unit. Both books are good and highly reccomended.

Story of a time when the world looked the other way and a lot of good people got s*****d over by Politicians, as usual. This is the inside detail of one of the finest Regiments ever to exist.
Spot on Chris, could see the barracks gates again and, almost smell it.

Super Book, Lots of Good Gouge

"Fireforce" is probably the best known and most widely read book to come out of Rhodesia's Bush War. This is in fact the fourth edition from 2006 and it's just a super read. Another personal narrative, this one is also written from the stick leader/section leader point of view. That being said, the author provided plenty of background information so the reader can see the bigger picture. Some of the things I appreciated about the book: 1. There are tons of photographs scattered throughout including two color photograph sections, 2. It has a good map and a good index, 3. Several interesting appendices for you to peruse including an operations order reproduced in its entirety, 4. A chapter on uniforms, comms, weapons, and equipment (both Rhodie and terr) and 5. Pencil sketches at the beginning of each chapter. This is not "zap-blat-gott-in-himmel-bayonet-in-the-guts" braggadocio of a former RLI soldier, it's solid (that goes for Charlie Warren's book too). I highly recommend it, it's a must read.

A fascinating group biography of Hollywood's founding moguls

Neal Gabler explores the fascinating question of how Hollywood was created primarily by a remarkable group of men who fit into a remarkably small demographic: European Jewish immigrants, most of them poor, most of them from Manhattan's lower east side, none of them practicing Jews, most of them from families with weak father figures. But together they moved to an almost completely protestant city and created the most successful form of popular entertainment in America, presenting an idealized version of American life for a nation in a constant for new national myths. The most fascinating thing about the book is the gap between the mythical world that they were presenting and their own backgrounds. For Louis B. Mayer, Andy Hardy's America was for him the real America, an America where there were strong nuclear families headed by strong fathers, doting neo-Victorian mothers, and obedient, respectful children. Economically most people were Middle Class, the tenor distinctively Middle American, and almost always Christian. Gabler argues that for most of these men, what they provided was not America as it existed, but the America that they wanted to be a part of.

Almost all of the major studios were founded by men who more or less fit Gabler's description. There are a number of major and minor characters in Gabler's story, the most prominent being Adolph Zukor, who was instrumental in creating Paramount; Carl Laemmle, founder of Universal; William Fox of Fox Pictures, which later merged with Twentieth Century; Louis B. Mayer, who built MGM into Hollywood's largest studio; Harry and Jack Warner of Warner Brothers; and the belligerent Harry Cohn of Columbia. There are in addition a number of crucial supporting characters, none more important than the legendary Irving Thalberg (I knew very slightly Thalberg's son, also Irving, an academic philosopher who spent his career in Chicago and who quietly funded liberal political causes--he paid for the Chicago Seven's legal bills at their trial--while quietly pursuing his university career), the inspiration for F. Scott Fitzgerald's last novel THE LAST TYCOON. We also meet the Schenck brothers, Nicholas and Joseph, the Rabbi of Hollywood Edgar F. Magnin, theater chain owner Marcus Loew, and an uncountable number of smaller figures.

One of the most striking aspects of the biography is how utterly these men suppressed their Jewish backgrounds in their films. Although THE JAZZ SINGER is the story of the son of a Jewish son rejecting the culture of his cantor father (Gabler points out that the son's story was also the story of the moguls), the vast majority of movies produced by Hollywood in the twenties, thirties, and forties contained no identifiably Jewish characters. Although an astonishing number of the people producing the movies were Jewish, it was as if they felt compelled to completely erase Jews from their idealization of American life. The was more than mere assimilationist aspirations; it was as if they were trying to expunge the weak fathers of their youths, the poverty they knew growing up, and become a part of a nation that largely rejected them. For two or three decades, at least, they could maintain this myth, but in the forties and the HUAC committee of the U.S. House of Representatives they found their fiefdom increasingly under attack for the industry's supposed inculcation of un-American (i.e., Communist) values. Many of their attackers persisted in the fascist depiction of Communism as an essentially Jewish cast of thought (in Hitler's writings there is no clear distinction between Jews and Communists, and at least one part of his motivation in attacking Russia was to attack what he weirdly considered a Jewish nation).

This is not a perfect book. For one thing, the scope is simply too large for any one book to undertake. And inevitably there are either serious omissions or details that don't quite tell the whole story. For instance, Gabler attempts to characterize the more plebian tendencies at Warner's by mentioning that one of their stars was Rin Tin Tin, which seems to hint at how far down the ladder they were in the Hollywood pecking order, but failing to note that for most of his life Rin Tin Tin was the number one box office star in Hollywood. Also, there is amazingly little discussion of the many Jewish performers in Hollywood. Some are mentioned in passing (such as Groucho Marx, noting his famous reply to the attempt by the Jewish country club Hillcrest to recruit new members following the stock market crash, that he wouldn't want to be a member of a club that would accept someone like him as a member), and Edward G. Robinson gets a few mentions, but for the most part actors are ignored. This is overwhelmingly a book about the top brass. And one can take issue with some minor depictions, such as the long discussion of the nature of Universal in the thirties, but no mention of the man who is most responsible for the visual look of those films and the director of all their major achievements, James Whale. The implication is that the distinctive look of Universal films was not determined by the former art director Whale. But this is all nitpicking.

I do have to take strong issue with one of the current featured reviews that criticizes the book because he believes that the American depicted in the movies was very much the America he knew in the forties and fifties. First, the book deals mainly with America in the twenties and thirties, a bit less with the forties, and the fifties almost not at all, so the time framework of his criticism is off. Second, how can anyone argue that the movies were not an idealization if one knows any American history at all? Certainly the poverty that my parents and grandparents knew growing up in Arkansas during those decades was almost completely ignored, THE GRAPES OF WRATH aside (and the subject of that film were very much my people). Any informed demographic study of the period will show that the depiction of women in the films was wildly out of kilter with the actual lives of women, many of whom had to take jobs even in the thirties, forties, and fifties to enable families to make it financially (the fifties is the only decade in American history of which the so-called traditional American family is even somewhat true). And Hollywood films of the period are notorious today for their depiction of race relations. Anyone stating that the Hollywood film in any conceivable sense depicted America as it really existed beggars credulity.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone either interested in the history of the movie industry or how immigrants sought to integrate themselves in their new nation. The book contains a wealth of information and I can't imagine anyone know coming away from it not merely entertained but better informed.

In the early 1970s, the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA) began to revise its trade policy towards the outside world. It needed to counter the European Community’s bid to implement its Common Commercial Policy and thereby change East-West trade practices. Foreign trade priorities became at once a crucial issue on the socialist countries’ political agenda. The key question was whether they would have to open their system to the global economy – and bear the consequent pressures and competition that this decision entailed. Based on newly declassified archival sources, this study shows how the East European states were able to lobby their positions towards the USSR within the CMEA. The pressure from its allies forced the Soviet leadership to accept the CMEA’s opening towards the EC.

About the Author

Karl Drlica, Ph.D. is a Principal Investigator at the Public Health Research Institute and Professor of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics at the UMDNJ–New Jersey Medical School in Newark. His laboratory focuses on fluoroquinolone action and resistance with Mycobacteriun tuberculosis and other bacteria, including approaches for slowing the enrichment and amplification of resistant bacterial subpopulations.

Perlin, Ph.D. is Executive Director of the Public Health Research Institute and UMDNJ Regional Biocontainment Laboratory, as well as Professor of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics at the New Jersey Medical School in Newark. He is also a Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences. Dr. Perlin’s laboratory explores mechanisms of antifungal drug-resistance, rapid detection of drug resistant bloodstream pathogens in high-risk patients, and the application of small-animal models for the study of respiratory pathogens.

readable for a layman. too fundamental for experts

Having finished the book in one sitting, I flipped back to the preface in search of what its targeted audience is. It was "initially drafted to supplement studies of infectious disease" and the authors later "aim to make the principles of antibiotic use and effectiveness available to a large audience: farmers, hospital administrators.....and especially individual users."

The book's content and style of writing serves well for the above targeted audience. The book is suitable for use at a high school or college freshman year level as a supplement. Interesting historical facts and social ramifications interspersed throughout the book. The book is light on the academic or theoretical side of it, probably intentionally so. It touches on biological mechanisms just enough to make a layman understand what they want to tell next, nothing more. Nonetheless, this book is a laudable attempt to educate the public about the subject.

Antibiotic Use: Cause and Effect

The authors outline and explain a problem that is not new but is starting to be brought into the public light. This book is written for people who use antibiotics and is written at an introductory yet clear level. The paramedics, farmers, hospital administrators and especially the public at large should read this book. If you do not have a background in basic biology the authors have included two appendix that give the basic background required to understand the rest of the text and I would recommend starting there.

The book is well presented on how the medical and agricultural use of antibiotics and their misuse has lead to pathogens mutating and becoming antibiotic resistance. And at present dosage and actually overuse of antibiotics will lead to a pathogen that will cause a pandemic. When is not discussed but when you read that rate at which the resistance strain mutate and spread it seems that this should be a subject of high priority. Yet pharmaceutical companies have been shutting down their antibiotic research division for it is not cost effective for them to continue.

The book is informative and not an alarmist manifesto. It covers the facts of use and history of antibiotics and present day measures. And proposes how we may be able to stop this path to a super resistant pathogen; a term not used by the authors. Most people know that the effectiveness of any type of drug diminishes with use and in low dosage the pathogens themselves become resistant. In order to rectify this situation will take a change of culture for all involved; farmers, medical professionals and moist important the general public. At present the authors show that all we are doing at present to slow down the spread and creation of antibiotic resistant pathogens is to increase dosage levels. These increased dosages may have more side effects but avoid the spread of the resistant pathogens.

I highly recommend that this book be read by medical practitioner, farmers and anyone who uses antibiotics. This is a very easy and interesting read.

Antibiotic resistance is the ability of a microorganism to withstand the effects of an antibiotic.
Antibiotic resistance evolves naturally via natural selection through random mutation, but it could also be engineered by applying an evolutionary stress on a population. Antibiotic resistance is a consequence of evolution via natural selection.

Once such a gene is generated, bacteria can then transfer the genetic information in a horizontal fashion (between individuals) by plasmid exchange. "Antibiotic Resistance: Understanding And Responding To An Emerging Crisis" explains the concept of multiresistant organisms (aka; a "Superbug").

Bacteria which have a mutation allowing them to survive antibiotic intervention will live on to reproduce; passing on this resistance to their offspring in the next generation

Drlica & Perlin point out that the patterns of antibiotic usage greatly affect the number of resistant organisms which develop. Overuse of broad-spectrum antibiotics, such as second- and third-generation cephalosporins, greatly hastens the development of methicillin resistance.

Other factors contributing towards resistance include incorrect diagnosis, unnecessary prescriptions, improper use of antibiotics by patients, and the use of antibiotics as livestock food additives for growth promotion.

The book has the classic hallmarks of becoming a desktop reference for the clinician and those interested in new emerging bio-hazardous threats. I found the glossary very helpful and also the "light" and playful arrangement of facts an figures made the book enjoyable NOT another bland, boring "for scientists only". The layout reminded me of the "... For Dummies" and "The Complete Idiot's Guide To..." books. Which is a good thing. Comprehension of materials is the main point. No use having very dry, stuffy and hard to read or follow books ... which end up covered in dust and cobwebs for their unreadability.

Chinese Link is by far the best structured and sequenced textbook I have ever seen with a scope covering all necessary structural and communicative elements for elementary Chinese.

I am a strong supporter for this practice to combine pinyin with characters in first year textbook since it will give learners immediate hints about the pronunciation of characters which are totally foreign to English speaking Chinese learners.

About the Author

Sue-mei Wu, Ph.D., Associate Teaching Professor of Chinese Studies in the Modern Languages Department at Carnegie Mellon University. She is the project leader and primary author for the Chinese Link textbook project (Beginning and Intermediate levels). She received her Ph.D. in linguistics, with a minor in language pedagogy, from the Ohio State University. She has taught at Ohio State University, Harvard University and Carnegie Mellon University. She has devoted her linguistic, pedagogy and technology expertise to creating and developing various innovative new Chinese courses, textbooks, online courses and web pages. She has designed, developed and coordinated all levels of Chinese languages and culture courses and received several awards to support developing online language, culture and folk performance modules. She is the chair of the Chinese LearnLab of the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center (PSLC, funded by NSF, http://learnlab.org), and the PI of various online Chinese language and culture projects. She is the project leader and coordinator of the Chinese Online project funded by NSF. She is the co-author of Classical Chinese Primer (Hong Kong: The Chinese University Press) and the co-author of a new textbook for heritage learners.

Yueming Yu, PhD., Teaching Professor and Coordinator of the Chinese Studies Program of the Department of Modern Languages at Carnegie Mellon University and co-author of the Chinese Link textbook project. She came to CMU in 1992 to start the Chinese Program at the Department of Modern Languages and has been the Coordinator of the program ever since. She has more than 40 years of experience in teaching a foreign language. She has taught various levels of Chinese courses and in recent years has focused on the content courses at the advanced level of Chinese. Before she came to the US, she was an Associate Professor of English as well as the coordinator of the International Journalism Program at the Shanghai International Studies University. She was also one of the founding members of the English newspaper (Students Weekly) in Shanghai and a pioneer for the English News Program of Radio Shanghai. She has translated several books from English to Chinese, and compiled English-Chinese dictionaries. Her doctoral dissertation was a research on the criteria used in the selection of textbooks for teaching Chinese in the United States. Her current research focuses on pedagogical issues in Chinese language education with an emphasis on the relationship between teaching language and teaching culture, including a special focus on the teaching of heritage students. She is also the project leader of another textbook of Chinese for heritage students and published a series of Chinese textbooks for online use by high school students.

Yanhui Zhang, PhD., is Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics at Chinese University of Hong Kong.� She received her PhD. in Second Language Acquisition at Carnegie Mellon University.� Her research focuses on the fluency and robustness of second language basic skills learning, cross-language transfer, computer-assisted language learning, and bilingual education.

Weizhong Tian, obtained her Bachelor of Art degree in English Language and Literature from Peking University, one of the most prestigious universities in mainland China. She has been an Instructor of Chinese in the Modern Languages Department at Carnegie Mellon University. Before coming to the U.S., she taught various levels of English as well as English for Business at a university in China.�

Good price for what you get, i guess

I liked that it was binder because the one at my school was not binded, so it need to be put into a binder.
The one at my school also included all the audio cps and access codes, but it was 80.00

WARNING: This does not come with an access code card, you have to buy it seperately. That was a major downer.

Pretty good book for learning Chinese...

This is a pretty good resource for Chinese learning, but be aware that it does not teach you anything about the culture and why some words are not used anymore due to their changed meanings. This book teaches you how to talk like a robot, which is a good way to start. Anyway, I recommend this to beginners, but do a little history reading about China before you simply go over there calling people names!!!

I got this book for my Chinese class, I actually got the wrong book! We were using the Simple Character Version. Both of the books would work, I actually think traditional Chinese characters look a lot prettier than simple.
