Mostly a waste of time.

I'm not real impressed by this book. Some of what he says make sense, and yet other parts contradict decades of careful research into NDE experiences and the paranormal in general. In particular, his assertion that one need be "awakened" (enlightened) in order to survive death with one's consciousness intact is not supported by current NDE and spiritual research.

Everyone survives death and Pepin is just flatly wrong here, as far as I know.

Worse, this book seems like a long spiel on spirituality and "awakening" that could of been done in a book 1/3rd or less the size of this book.

To top it off, near the end he starts talking about his "special" brand of meditation and why it's superior to other, traditional methods. Of course... he just describes how it's superior, but never explains how to do it!

I guess you have to buy more of his books to learn that.

Pepin comes across to me as a salesman, more than any sort of so-called "spiritual teacher".

It Will Change Your Life

This is not an ordinary book. It has many levels. Each time I read it, the understanding to comprehend another layer is given to me. In a way, it's like peeling an onion, but you are that onion. You find out more about yourself and you cry a little. Peel away another layer and cry some more. Reading it opened a doorway to my consciousness that had been shut for many years. The author, Eric J. Pepin, uses analogies to simplify the most complex topics so that anyone can understand them. He gives you keys that will expand your consciousness and open you to receiving profound spiritual experiences, if you let them.

Have you ever wondered what is the meaning of life? What is God? How do we communicate with God? What happens when we die? Does God know everything and everyone? Why do bad things happen to good people? Why am I always distracted when trying to meditate? Why do I always feel more peaceful when I'm in nature and away from people? How much time does meditation take?

These questions and many more are answered in Handbook of the Navigator. This is one of the most profound spiritual book I've ever read. If you have ever felt that there was a greater purpose to your life, read this book. I highly recommend it. It will change your life, if you only let it.

Revelations To Contemplate

When was the last time you ordered a roast beef sandwich, and got a slice of bread and some lettuce? A restaurant would never do that to their paying customers, but organized religion does it all the time.
Personally, I've never been satisfied with religion and their stories. So, I looked into New Age crystals and spirit guides, and all that, which was better, but there was still a missing piece.
I felt that there was so much more, and everyone seemed to take the same message, change the wording, and market it as something `NEW`. Of course, I bought it only to meet with disappointment.
The Handbook Of The Navigator felt different. There were so many questions that were never answered by traditional religions and spiritual paths. The knowledge shared in The Handbook just felt right. I had this inner knowing that resonated with each and every page...it was that `NEW` knowledge, the missing piece that I needed to finally complete the puzzle of life.
Reflecting upon the knowledge, really contemplating it created those revelations I needed in order to feel the sense of satisfaction I had been searching for, but never found in all my years of studying religious teachings and New Age fairy tales.

Old reservoir engineering

I have read the book and found that it basically covers the state of the art of "classical" reservoir engineering of about the 60's or 70's, with some material taken from papers published in the 80's and 90's. It is outdated to a great extent.
The virtue of this book is that it reviews a wide range of topics like MBEs, IPRs, basic reservoir fluid properties, etc. Good for undergrads taking courses in reservoir engineering.
The statements at the back side of the cover (second edition) are misleading. This book does not contain "all of the information and insight a reservoir engineer must have to do the job right", nor is it "the complete resource for students and professionals in the petroleum industry". This book is only at the introductory level and there are many other books like Dake and Craft & Hawkins which cover almost the same topics with more detail.
If it is an extensive reference book what you are looking for, I would rather recommend the Petroleum Engineering Handbook. It is more comprehensive and can cost you about the same price or less (if you are an SPE member).

Great book to find all basic topics on reservoir engineering

I've seen that all topics on reservoir engineering have been covered in sufficient detail and very systematically. I strongly reccommed the book to those looking for a starting book on reservoir engineering and to those who, after a while, got lost among SPE papers and specialized books to come back to the backbone of the issue.

Whilst the head was that of the ancient scribe, his shrivelled and desiccated, rotted brown face staring eyelessly up from his Middle Kingdom coffin, from the neck down, wrapped up in the layers of bandages, was not the mummified remains which they had expected.

Stunned and horrified, Lavelle and a helper had then proceeded to extricate the bloody, a decapitated corpse of a recently-killed man.

The group behind the acquisition of the mummy, anxious to keep the police out of the case, enlist the help of a private investigator - Adam Blake.

For Blake, the case offer an escape from his more mundane work of digging into match fixing in illegal boxing, and has no qualms about downing tools on his other cases to look into the mystery of the contaminated sarcophagus.

However, once in the employment of the society, a sceptical Blake finds himself at odds with the superstitions of his bosses’ beliefs in the ancient Egyptian occult.

Bemused by the methods and dogmas these apparent men of industry indulge in, Blake sets about methodically digging into the murky world of the Order’s associates.

He soon realises just how nonsensical a world he has marched into, leaving him to questioning his own beliefs.

Charming British mystery

Mummies, murders, macabre, menacing midgets, alliterations, so much done right in such a slim volume. Ok, technically it's a menacing dwarf and only some of the one mummy, but sometimes one must give into to the rhythm of the written word. This was a very fun read, primarily because it included a lot of the elements I enjoy, Ancient Egypt lore, esoteric society and a horror author as one of its members, circus, just a hint of supernatural and a murder mystery, all done British style as a bonus. So basically was a perfectly decent (not great by any means, but solid) story in itself about a private detective investigating a murder among an exclusive private club of amateur Egyptologist aficionados, that just so happened to be optimally enhanced by the right combination of accoutrements for a reader of particular tastes. And thus a very entertaining way to spend a couple of hours. Recommended.

Macabre indeed

This is a fast read with a little bit of everything for those who like their mysteries with a touch of the creepy. There are ancient Egyptian rituals, headless corpses, a hardboiled detective, some circus freaks, and plenty of twists. The atmosphere is very English, with a definite eerie chill in the air. A murder shouldn't be this much fun!

Another very good book!

Another winner by Janet Wellington! I read her first book for free, and loved it so much I actually paid for this one (something I rarely do, due to fixed income)
Angie is an up-and-coming TV reporter, engaged to her boss, and she is somewhat embarrassed by her background as a "farmer's daughter". Jason is a landscape architect and, as we find out later in the book, a talented metal sculptor, who was quite well known before his wife suddenly passed away. Angie is assigned to do "Up Close and Personal" series about Jason's new project, a neighborhood gardening project meant to eventually go national. They are both attracted to each other, but don't want to act on those feelings.
I won't go into details, because I don't want to accidentally put in spoilers, but I loved this book and these characters and watching their relationship develop. I didn't see any errors in grammar or spelling, thank goodness. There's no sex scenes either, which I liked. Some authors go into too much detail for me! I even bought the next book in the series, "Cowboy For Sale" after reading the first 3 chapters at the end of this book. I actually paid for that one too! Wow...paying for two books in a row? That's rare for me. Janet Wellington has just become my new favorite author!

Barnett’s, Samuel Huntington’s and Edward Sa�d’s top-down approach to the turn-of-the-twenty-first century clash of the West and the Rest, this book takes readers on a three thousand year, grassroots journey through imperialism, linguistics, and applied critical theory to show readers that peace eludes us because we are not all working with the same definition of national security.
By adding a Saharan world trade system to the conventional Oriental-Occidental binary of traditional Western Civilization narratives, this book opens a view of Western Europe as a colonized territory of a medieval Roman empire that never died. A parallel imperial reorganization occurred in West Asia. Both systems deployed patriarchy as a gender bomb to implode and conquer matriarchal economies. This clash of European, West Asian and African matriarchal and patriarchal empires was the crucible that produced the United States of America as elder sibling of the family of post-colonial frontier nations.
The author argues that patriarchal imperialists of Africa, Western Asia and Western Europe tempted matriarchal men to betray the rights of women in exchange for the benefits of patria potestas. Patriarchal empires then corrupt definitions of fatherhood and dehumanize the conquered men until they suffer from a societal malaise that the author calls patria impotestas. Such economically castrated men revolted in the past and they respond now with twenty-first century mass protests against austerity measures in Europe and protests against Wall Street in the U.S. as well as with acts of terrorism and, tragically, war crimes against women.
In this book, the most insecure people are the elite. The author concludes that terrorism, piracy and acts of sabotage against industrial physical plants will continue in Africa, Asia and the West until ordinary people around the world have positive answers to the Primordial Question: Will my family eat today and sleep peacefully through the night?

About the Author
Sebastian Sch�tze was a longtime research fellow at the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max Planck Institute for Art History) in Rome. He is a member of the academic board of the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici in Naples, and a corresponding member of the �sterreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften. From 2003 to 2009 he held the Bader Chair in Southern Baroque Art at Queen’s University in Kingston. In 2009 he was appointed Professor of Early Modern Art History at Vienna University.

Too Dark is right!

I just returned from a 2 1/2 week trip to Italy during which time I visited Uffizi, Borghese, San Luigi dei Francesi, Santa Maria del Popolo, Pitti Palace, Pinoteca Capitolina, and the Scuderie dei Quirinale CARAVAGGIO exhibition. So I have personally viewed nearly half of Caravaggio's authenticated works within the past month. And, to confirm the writings of some of the other reviewers, many of the reproduction plates in this book are inaccurately dark. I was disappointed with the cave-like lighting provided at the Quirinale show, but even those tiny halogen bulbs illuminated more of the subtleties of M. Merisi's work than do the reproductions in this book, which was proudly announced as being full of new - and supposedly properly exposed - photographs.

One great mystery lies in the fact that where there are multiple representations of the same work, the brightness levels vary - sometimes greatly - from one photo to the next. In nearly all cases the detail plates (which are full-bleed) are brighter and more accurate than the full-size shots. The smaller photos displaying the Cantarelli Chapel at San Luigi more faithfully reproduce the colors of the St. Matthew trilogy than do the dedicated full-page plates. I have little technical knowledge of the printing process, but it seems to me that those who do this for a living (especially at this book's price-point!) would know how to calibrate their devices, publishing software and inks to produce a finished product of consistent tone and luminance.

A couple of other quibbles:

1. The book is divided into two major sections: The first, on heavy glossy stock, combines the more 'free-form' essays which put Caravaggio's paintings into context with his life, his contemporaries, and his influences, with the full-size and detail plates accompanied by smaller reproductions of mentioned works by other artists. But as you read, the plates run farther and farther ahead of the text, so the words on page 115 might describe a work reproduced on page 138. Considering the amount of blank space on some of the pages, the design team at Taschen might have considered a layout whereby the reader could view the plate and read the relevant text without sticking multiple fingers of both hands between the pages to hold his place. The second section, on a matte stock, contains the catalogue, which, while focusing more on provenance, still ends up containing significant redundancies with the essays.

2. While nearly all of the horizontally-oriented works are treated to spread-size reproductions (16" x 24" minus margins), all of the vertically-oriented works are displayed on single pages with margins (for example The Seven Acts Of Mercy is 8 5/8" x 13"). Since the size and weight of the book obviate the need for viewing it on a table rather than in the lap, a few larger representations of vertical works which required the rotation of the book would have been a nice addition.

FYI, there are three tri-fold full-bleed details: The Calling Of St Matthew, The Seven Acts Of Mercy, and the Borghese St Jerome Writing).

I await the delivery of a used copy of the Puglisi book, as well as the reissue of the Spike; perhaps between those three and my Quirinale exhibition catalogue I will acquire a complete set of Caravaggio reproductions of the highest quality.

One of the very best Caravaggio art books.

Caravaggio ( 1571-1610 ) was an Italian painter of the Baroque movement renowned for his bold and masterful use of light and darkness ( Chiaroscuro ) to create dramatic compositions.

This art book by Taschen is a splendid reproduction of the now out of print deluxe edition Caravaggio: The Complete Works, first published in 2009. Although slightly smaller in print size than the original edition, the book is still a hefty volume and comes at a much lower price tag, making it a great value purchase for a very comprehensive collection of Caravaggio's works.

The huge prints of Caravaggio's paintings are beautifully and faithfully reproduced in the book, and the page count and content is identical to the original edition.

There are many Caravaggio art books out there, but this is one the best. Taschen has created a book of exceptional value and quality, and this gets my highest recommendations.

Physical exam for this aesthetics-with brains-with brawn champion

The subtitle is actually The Complete Works rather than ...Paintings. Page count is 306, not 480.

In black boards with gold lettering, and a beautiful jacket of the head of Judith exemplifying the stunning dimensions of the masterpieces and details within.

The book opens with six spreads picturing six head details. The book is printed and sewed (in Italy) with state of the art tolerances and lies flat, but occasionally of course threads or a razor thin line is visible in the center of a spread spanned by an art piece.

All page stock is substantial, semiglossy up through page 242 for utterly convincing color of full and detail reproductions, entailing bleeds or white framing; from page 243 onward, uncoated paper that is a pleasure to the touch and takes the ink very well to reproduce all the pictures again in smaller size, say 3 by 5 inches, for reference as you read the detailed descriptions.

The Catalogue first presents Paintings 1-67, in chronological order, and comprising, in the opinion of the author, indubitably autograph works (as well as copies of them). Paintings 68-89 are accepted by some Caravaggio scholars but should be regarded as copies or imitations by other hands; this category includes also potentially autograph works whose appraisal is impaired, for example by their poor state of preservation (nor can absolute chronology be established).

The volume includes three foldouts, so you can enjoy a panoramic three-page view of a detail. Some paintings are also shown in their architectural settings. The works of some other artists are included in reduced format to contribute to the scholarly text, which is quite readable in double-column double-spaced format. You will want to lay this big book on a surface for comfortable investigation.

MY FOOTNOTES (the book avoids them)

This book reached me at the UPS Store in an overlarge box, like it was a 20 inch tv set, and stuffed with air bladders, but those UPS guys ripped into it at my request. The book itself is packed in a tight corrugated cardboard "attache case" with a pullup plastic handle, and is a bitch to open. The long ribbon attached to the book as place marker does leave an indentation on the page it touches during tight storage.
