In January 1916, Alfred, a young Canadian family man living in Southern Ontario, attends a meeting where a persuasive army officer tries to convince the attendees to do their patriotic duty regarding the war in Europe. Although he later blames it on the free-flowing beer, before he leaves the hotel, Alfred agrees to serve in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force. The 11th Hour of the 11th Day follows Alfred as he faces the horrors of war and shows how life changes for his family left at home.
The 11th Hour of the 11th Day is based on a true story that captivates readers as they become part of this family. It is both a love story and a war story that demonstrates bravery and determination as the characters strive to overcome life's challenges. Alfred's actual military and medical records are followed detailing the life of a CEF enlisted man and the terrific battles, The Somme and Vimy Ridge, he engaged in. But while the soldiers are away, life also changed for the wives left behind. One hundred years ago, women were dependent on their husbands for support and family decisions. When Alfred left, Annie became the head of the household, responsible and unprepared for the demands presented to her. When Alfred returns home, he is not the man who left, and Annie is not the girl he left behind.
The centennial of World War One (2014) is almost here. The 11th Hour of the 11th Day gives the reader an understanding of the impact of the War to End All Wars on the lives of ordinary people. With a 1914 population of only 7.2 million, Canada contributed 619,636 men and women to the Great War. When the guns fell silent on Nov. 11, 1918, nearly one in ten of those Canadians had died in battle and 173,000 returned home wounded.

Brenda Ritter on The 11th Hour of the 11th Day
At first I was surprised to get so many calls and e-mails about those who have read The 11th hour of the 11th Day. One wastheformer chairman of Oklahoma State University's Journalism Department who wrote a four-page favorable review of the novel. I think most readers identify with the family because although The 11th Hour of the 11th Dayis a novel, it is fiction that moves the reader into reality. That is because most everything in the novel actually happened. When I first started writing the novel, I sent it to my daughter Jennifer who, at that time, was head of the Writing Center at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. I took my name off of the manuscript and suggested that perhaps some of her writing students would like to edit it. I was surprised that the most interested student was a male Inuit who shared his insights with me. I always felt it was my destiny to write this family saga and my thoughts turned into action when I received a large envelope from the National Archives of Canada. It contained my grandfather's military and medical records. As I read the handwritten pages, they revealed a story of suffering, endurance and a tenacity to live. The 11th Hour of the 11th Dayappeals to both men and women and everyone seems to have the same reaction. When they call me, their first words are, "When are you writing the sequel?" They tell me that when they start reading the book, they cannot put it down and some have stayed up all night. I received a call from a friend who stars in a recent documentary being shown on PBS. In a very excited voice, he pleaded with me to tell him what happens next."While I was reading this book, I felt like I was part of this family," he said. I think that's the best compliment an author can receive. As we journey through the circle of life, let us not forget those who came before us and tell their stories.

11th Hour, 11th Day
By out2c
Many authors and readers will agree there are at least four basic success standards for a book or column that tells a story: (1) a beginning that grabs your attention, (2) a middle that thoroughly develops the story, (3) a strong ending, and key to them all is (4) a stirring of multiple emotions throughout. The 11th Hour of the 11th Day scores high in all these standards.
In The 11th Hour of the 11th Day, I was struck by author Brenda Ritter's attention to detail in describing her characters, their actions, dialogs and inner thoughts and feelings as the story unfolds. Such meticulous detail provides the reader telling insight into each one as "good people" doing their best to do what is right for each other, their country and the World War 1 allied effort. Combined, they are a reminder that all wartime heroes and struggles are not necessarily found on the front lines. These enlightenments breathe life into the story throughout the book.
The author acknowledges that this, her first novel, is a work of fiction based upon a true story and is historically correct supported by the medical and military records of the main character, Alfred Ouellette. The names of the main characters were changed for the telling of this story. It is a story evolving from the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force during the war between Great Britain and Germany. Timeframe of the novel generally is from the spring of 1913 through the winter of 1921. On November 11, 1918 and after four years of fighting, WW1 "Hostilities on all fronts will stop on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month," read an official government announcement. Although the war ends, the story of Alfred, Annie and their children in many ways is just beginning. The story continues for three more years.
Before reading The 11th Hour of the 11th Day, it is important to know that the story is told from Albert's perspective in the first person, present tense. While present tense story telling from beginning to end is not common among authors, it provides a refreshing and additional bonus element to this particular multi-faceted novel.
Within the overall theme of this writing is a series of vignettes that encompass war incidents, love stories, historic events, human struggles in victories and failures, life and death, family finances, security, children and personal dreams. And indeed, there is much more. There are numerous dramatic scenes that bring emotions to the surface at various levels. A common dialog thread is that of love, concern, respect, caring and a warm goodness among the characters who emerge as WW1 microcosms.
This novel begs for a sequel. But before it is written, you will be morally and spiritually uplifted in reading The 11th Hour of the 11th Day.

GREAT STORY!!!!
By Lupe
The 11th Hour of the 11th Day--what a great story! I believe that this book meets the four basic standards for successful story telling. The author Brenda Ritter grabs the attention of the reader immediately. As the story develops, the reader gets so interested and involved that it is hard to put the book down. I looked forward daily to pick up where I had left off the previous day. As I read to the end, my heart was beating with emotion and I ended up with tears in my eyes--wanting to know more of what happens to Alfred Oulette and his family. What a wonderful story of love and sacrifice. I was particularly impressed by the number of statistical research conducted by the author. I loved this book and recommend it highly to others.
