Great guide book.

I do several hikes on the Ice Age Trail in our county. This book gives detailed descriptions of the hikes along with detailed maps of every segment of the trail.

The "Hiker's Bible" of the Ice Age Trail

This book is meant to be used in conjunction with the IAT 2014 Atlas Maps as the guidebook does not show the maps of all the connecting routes, only the finished trail sections. With more than half of the entire trail being connecting routes at this time, the Atlas Maps are a must if you're planning a thru-hike. With that said though, this is a visually beautiful, and very useful guidebook.
There is an overview of each county that the trail passes through that lists trail miles and connecting miles as well as IAT Chapter Information, and County Information (like phone numbers to sheriff's office or state parks). Each trail segment in the book is broken down into a "Snapshot" - showing icons of trail features like water, camping, spur-trails, etc., "Trail Access and Parking", "The Hike", and "Area Services", along with a full-color map of that section. At the end of the guidebook is a nice glossary that contains definitions for commonly used names like "kame" and "hummocky" - yes, apparently that is a real word - and an index that allows you to search the book by segment name, or points of interest along the trail.
I could go on and on.... oh, and there are lots of full-colored photographs as well - almost too many! Why do I say that? This book is heavy - too heavy for a backpacker to carry for any length of distance. I'll be dissecting the book and carrying it in smaller pieces as I plan a long hike of the trail next year.
These guidebooks and maps are currently being updated every 3 years, so don't hesitate to pick this up in 2015 or 2016 - you won't see a new version until 2017, although the updates to changes will be available on the Ice Age Trail website.

Who knew this great trail existed? I didn't.

I had never heard of the Wisconsin Ice Age Trail, but a quick look at their website had me coming to Amazon to order the guidebook. The pictures in it are beautiful. It's a 1000 mile trail across the state of Wisconsin following the extent of the glaciers many moons ago. Fabulous maps. Can't wait for the summer to try out a few sections.
