The Book of Mara, by Ada Negri

Ada Negri, the author of ten volumes of poetry who enjoyed an international reputation for her frank and passionate writing, had a tormented love affair with a man whose life was cut short by premature death. She translated this experience into "The Book of Mara," in essence one long poem arising from a woman’s most intimate place as if in a visceral scream — a most passionate expression of love, loss and redemption. Written with unusual frankness, especially in view of Italian society of the time, "The Book of Mara," along with "Songs of the Island," is considered the high point of Negri’s poetic work. Through metrical and formal execution, "The Book of Mara" demonstrates the originality of her verse, which opens up to a more personal dimension — almost prose-like. Her verse is impressionistic, almost mystical, spanned with bristling lyrics, sudden igniting bursts and visionary flashes. Negri’s poetry was made by going deep inside herself, into the travail of her childhood, into the solitude and the sleeplessness around an uncertain future, into the wounds of sorrow and the misfortune that befalls each one of us. Her poems express an ardent though fruitless hope, in wait of a great love; made light by those rare moments of abandon and happiness. First English translation, by Maria A Costantini. Dual-language edition. Introduction, bibliography. 118 pages.

About the Author
Ada Negri was born on February 3, 1870 in the town of Lodi, near Milan. At eighteen, she left home to become an elementary-school teacher in a rural Lombard town and began to publish her first poems, pursuing the theme of social injustice, which derived from her first-hand experience of the plight of the working class. In 1894, with the publication of her first volume of poetry, "Fatalit," Negri obtained an appointment to the normal school at Milan and won the Milli Prize, which provided her with a small stipend and freed her to devote her time to writing. In 1895, she published "Tempeste" (Tempests), where she continued to pursue the theme of social injustice. In 1896, she married industrialist Giovanni Garlanda, and by 1904, they had two daughters. In 1913, Negri separated from her husband, moving to Switzerland with her surviving daughter, Bianca. Her poetry turned to personal conflicts as well as her dread of the imminent world war. After she re-entered Italy, she had a tormented love affair, the experience she described in "Il libro di Mara" ("The Book of Mara," 1919). Toward the end of March 1923, Negri enjoyed a brief holiday in Sicily and from there she went to the island of Capri, where she stayed for about a year and wrote "I Canti dell’Isola" ("Songs of the Island"). In 1943, in an attempt to escape the horrors of the Second World War, Negri moved to her daughter’s home in Bollate, near Milan. But, from there, she could still hear the constant bombings on Milan. She moved farther: first to Gajone, then Pavia, to no avail. The war brought her such anguish that she requested her final work, "Fons Amoris," be published only after the war had ended. By 1944, Negri had returned to Milan, after taking up residence in numerous places, and there she died on January 11, 1945, four months short of the end of the war that haunted her final years. Negri had an international reputation. She published ten volumes of poetry, eight prose stories and one novel, "Stella Mattutina" ("Morning Star"). In 1940 Negri became the first woman admitted into the Royal Academy of Italy.

A Monumental Achievement!
By Michelle Rossi
"The Book of Mara," translated by Maria Costantini is truly a
monumental achievement. As evidenced in this work, Ms. Costantini is a brilliant scholar who, by reflecting back on poetry written a century ago, brings to life a creation the celebrated Italian poet Ada Negri would be very proud of; spiritually speaking, is proud of. The translations are lovingly faithful to the original, yet give a renewed meaning to Negri's profound words in a light that now expands and reaches out in English to multiple readers. Ms. Costantini's translations represent the crossing from one language, culture, and passage of one time period to another beautifully, bringing to a deeper level of understanding the universal experience of loving. The poems mirror the heart of any woman (or man), anywhere, anytime, who has loved and lost. The poems are so rhythmically intriguing and filled with passion you will not want to put the book down until reading the final word of the final sentence.

Ada Negri
By Cindy Frenkel
Maria Costantini's translation of Ada Negri is pure poetry--unrestrained in its passion yet tightly controlled, aching, joyful--these books will transport readers to Italy a century ago and remind them of what's right and wrong in their lives today. Costantini has ably demonstrated the depths of Negri's feelings while maintaining delicate lyricism which renders a haunting beauty. Superb books!

The Book of Mara hardcover
By ls
Maria Costantini is masterful in her translation of Ada Negri's "The Book of Mara." She integrates the palpable passion of Ada's poetry into an English translation that maintains the written art and captures the universality of deep, heart-wrenching love that was found and irrevocably lost. I look forward to reading additional translations of this poet's work by the equally talented Maria Costantini. Her painstaking efforts have enabled English speaking readers to appreciate the hidden treasures that lie in the untranslated written word.
