Review
'A book that hangs like a garment on a coat-hanger. A garment with many pockets. In the pockets numberless notes and remarks about clothes and history. Take it off the hanger and put it on. By which I mean - read it and walk through history. ' - John Berger
'Tansy Hoskins interrogates today's fashion landscape with rigour, intellectualism and gut instinct. Stitched Up contains a number of splendidly-articulated seminal moments that will make you view your wardrobe through a different lens. A fine investigation of the cultural tyranny of a multibillion pound industry, vast employer and polluter inclined to operate as if above censure. ' - Lucy Siegle, writer for The Observer and author of To Die For
'This is a wonderful book, bursting at the seams with power, passion and politics. Tansy Hoskins lays bare the capitalist relations of production, marketing and consumption that sustain the fashion industry, and calls for a revolution to liberate us from its tyranny. Clothes will never look the same again! ' - John Hilary, Executive Director at War on Want and author of The Poverty of Capitalism

Utterly fascinating and insightful this novel illuminates the dark heart of the fashion industry with raw candidness.
By Lucinda
This is a uniquely critical and rather controversial examination of the fashion and clothing industry, which {not unlike Marmite}will be met with equal divergence of opinion. Some readers may find the author's blunt frankness too raw whilst many including myself will be inspired by such boldness and brilliance of such writing. I loved how Tansy delves into the darkest corners of such a glamorous world, shedding a new light on one's perception and idea of this highly competitive and aggressive trade. Anyone interested or attached to conservation and the ecological and environmental issues that affect us all, will find themselves connecting intimately with the author's own personal views and opinions. The empathetic link between our planet and the booming fashion industry with Tansy's strong beliefs was admirable, hence I could not help but attach myself to what was written on the page.
Profoundly thought provoking and deeply interesting this book was shocking, surprising and wholly unexpected. Stitched Up {I loved the irony of the name!} is such a compelling read that provides a supremely singular examination of contemporary culture and the distorting priorities of capitalism, as well as the balance of power in such a strong industry. Studying topics such as consumerism {and I live in a UK town that's all retail and sales no manufacture}, exploitation and even racism. Tansy tackles head-on such important issues within an industry that is given rise to so many misconceptions and glossy faade's with such passion and depth of emotion that you cannot help but feel enthused and touched. The beautiful, specially commissioned illustrations that adorn the pages add another layer of brilliance to this fantastic book.
I found this book inspiring as well as heartbreaking and was affected by so many different emotions; from rage to eagerness in finding our more and learning more. This is not an easy subject to broach and yet the author has written such a notable literary work as to be highly acclaimed and greatly valued. I envisage mixed views on this!

Superb analysis and insight

Really enjoyed this. It has so much to say about the sprawling and morally ambiguous fashion industry that permeates all our lives. If you've ever shopped at Gap, H&M, Primark and all the rest, you need to read this

This books puts things into perspective and allows those who don't have an in depth knowledge of chemicals, environmental waste, etc. to understand what's impacting us globally. It's a book I will continue to suggest to friends.
